Profile bio

About William Knight

I've been incredibly fortunate to have accumulated many years of experience in software delivery, with some of the best names out there. I've worked with tier-one organizations like ACC, Westpac NZ, Ministry of Social Development, Bank of New Zealand and British Airways, and I've developed code with small software houses and individual product owners. I love every opportunity to continue learning and see how different organisations build products, apply delivery principles and implement their own unique journey.I currently work as a developer and Jira trainer. I have a passionate interest in increasing transparency and driving better decisions through visualisation which is where Jira comes in - and to get the most from it you do need some technical skills. But software development is the foundation on which my career is based and I am excited for a dynamic AI-driven future where so much more is possible in a much shorter timeframe than perhaps we have been used to.

Senior Agile Coach -- Transformation Analyst

Wellington, Wellington Region, New Zealand

Kāinga Ora (Homes and Communities) (KO) is embarking on a delivery optimisation program covering the entire Improvement Portfolio. Working with the excellent Nimbl consulting firm, KO has built a bridgehead for agility and pragmatic practices and want to go further. I was given two outcomes. The first, to inspect existing project and delivery data to establish the current baseline for visibility and transparency. This involved sourcing and analysing Jira and Sentient extracts and preparing a report. And the second, to add detail to a Value Stream delivery model prior to full consultation and implementation. Both outcomes were delivered in collaboration with Nimbl to create a number of first class leadership and executive reports. I wish KO all the very best on their continuing journey.

Ai Assisted Development Of Portfolio Insights Tool

Wellington, Wellington Region, New Zealand

Experiences with portfolio analysis and data migrations using generative AI to write T-SQL, powershell and other scripts led me to consider merging the two concepts. I set out to discover if generative AI could be used to develop a complete product in languages of which I had little experience. The goal was to create an online Proof-of-concept (POC) that took Jira data, analysed the data to provide portfolio management guidance and insight. The POC utilised a Node.JS backend, integrated to ChatGPT and Jira APIs, on top of an MS-SQL database. This was fronted in HTML, CSS, Google Charts and D3 visualisation library. All the code was developed by myself enabled by Chat GPT. The POC was used for the analysis that kicked off my subsequent engagement at Kāinga Ora (see above). In August 2023, I used my experiences to deliver an upbeat talk ‘Is Agility enabled by generative AI’ to the ACC agile community of practice setting out impacts to Agile from the growing use of AI for software development.

Scrum Master Trainer

Wellington, Wellington Region, New Zealand

ACC is an institutional bedrock of New Zealand society for injury compensation and care. Two years into ACC's scaled-agile implementation, to help build a vibrant Scrum Master (SM) practice, I was asked to help initialise and operate a "Home-Grown" program for developing new Scrum Masters from within ACC's passionate staff. The role included evolution of the ACC SM learning pathway for continuous learning, mentoring new Scrum Masters into roles, and supporting the agile community with ad-hoc training, talks and learning sessions. I worked with the Practice Lead to build a career development program for SMs and embed professionalism into the SM community.

Scrum Master

During my time at ACC I was called to act as temporary Scrum Master for several teams on three different release trains, enabling teams for PI Planning, and setting teams up for permanent Scrum Masters to follow. ACC's Scrum Master role follows the SAFe model, and allows for pragmatic delivery using either Scrum or Kanban.

Program Agile Coach & Portfolio Analyst

Anz

In 2018, many of NZ's banks needed far-reaching changes to deal with government changes to banking standards. ANZ had the need to integrate a huge waterfall program with a Scaled Agile delivery operation.I worked on a programme of 50 delivery teams across AU and NZ, where heavy governance and tight deadlines sound like there can be no agility. But we took the best, most appropriate agile techniques and rolled them out across the entire programme to improve progress visibility, reporting and decision making. The work involved extracting Jira data and developing a program data radiator (with an analyst), improving transparency, traceability and visibility. To make this work effective, I provided, communications, training and coaching, and worked with program leadership to operationalise and embed changes to practices and roles.

I am delighted to have had this opportunity to work in a fascinating, enthusiastic environment developing a great web-based software product and app in the Power retail sector. Knowing what good looks like can be a problem when you work in very challenging environments, but Flux proved the combination of devOps, agile, scale and visualisation really can create a great place to work.

Westpac gave me my second taste of SAFe-like agile scale as I worked as a Scrum Master for a Credit and Debit cards team.
