Dr. William Chan is Professor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne and Adjunct Lecturer at Monash University. He is a consultant and interventional cardiologist as well as a clinician-investigator. His public appointments are based at the Western and Sunshine Hospitals, and The Alfred where he works as a consultant cardiologist with close affiliation to the Baker Heart Institute. He is also the Head of Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories at Western Health and leads the Interventional Services Program. He has held the prestigious NHMRC Early Career Fellowship. He is actively involved in clinical research and supervises research and PhD fellows. Dr. Chan completed his cardiology training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital before undertaking a PhD at the Alfred Hospital and Baker Heart Institute. He has presented his research nationally and internationally and was the winner of the 2011 CSANZ Clinical Ralph Reader Prize for his research on the nature of left ventricular remodelling post myocardial infarction. His post-doctoral studies and advanced interventional cardiology fellowship were completed at the Mount Sinai and Toronto General Hospitals in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Chan has published in internationally renowned peer-reviewed journals including Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions, European Heart Journal, JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging, International Journal of Cardiology and Journal of American Heart Association.Dr. Chan’s clinical interests include all aspects of general cardiology; valvular heart disease; transradial coronary interventions including complex coronary interventions utilizing rotational atherectomy; catheter-based alcohol septal ablation for patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy who have failed medical therapy but who cannot undergo surgical myectomy because of co-morbidities; intravascular imaging with intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography; and left main stenting.
