There are many things in my life that I am proud to have accomplished. From small personal goals to being able to attend the American Legion's Buckeye Boys State, there have been many great accomplishments that have made me who I am, and that I am proud of. But my favorite feat goes back to an engineering project that my friend and I started for fun. This project started during winter break in 2021. My friend had purchased Mark Rober's engineering course and had asked me if I would like to join him. Our first project was based on mechanical engineering. For this part of the program, we built a drink delivery system for his desk. This was a great experience but was nothing compared to the second part of the program. The second project that we were to complete was one based on electrical engineering. After some brainstorming, we decided that it would be a challenge to try building a tesla coil. We found this process to be more difficult than we had hoped. After much research, we didn't find many tutorials on how to build a simple tesla coil. And everything that showed potential was behind a paywall or would come in a building kit. We didn't want to do that because that felt like cheating or dishonesty in the spirit of the program. Within a couple of days, we had gathered enough information from videos on tesla coils and a few discussion pages to be able to confidently go out and purchase the materials we needed to build a crude tesla coil. We started by perfectly wrapping high-gauge copper wire around a long PVC tube by hand, which was a very tedious process. We then created the primary coil out of copper tubing. The toroid was created using some duct tubing with aluminum tape wrapped around it. We had also purchased a high-voltage neon sign transformer to start with a decently high voltage. This transformer was connected to a series of salt-water capacitors, which were then connected to our spark gap. In the end, we found that the salt-water capacitors weren't working the way we wanted them to, so we just bought some regular capacitors. When we were all finished with the project, we had a tesla coil that worked! Sort of. It was able to power fluorescent bulbs without touching the coil, but it didn't give us that tesla coil bolt of electricity. After some research, we found that it may be because we didn't have the primary and secondary coils tuned properly. We plan to get back together during the 2022 winter break to try again and get it working to our expectations this time. With this, I developed a stronger love for engineering and its process.
