I started my career as a Seaman on the USCGC ROLLIN FRITCH, a Fast Response Cutter out of Cape May, NJ. I gained an invaluable perspective of being a junior enlisted coastguardsman, along with basic knowledge, qualifications, and incredible experiences from Guantanamo Bay to Boston. From there, I spent a year at Marion Military Institute before arriving at the US Coast Guard Academy. Since being at the Academy, I have been a Mechanical Engineering student and offshore sailor. Notably, I have been the Guidon bearer for Kilo-197 (TRACEN CAPE MAY), Charlie Company (MMI), and Foxtrot Company (CGA). Most importantly to my development as a Mechanical Engineer, I spent 6 weeks in E-City at the Aviation Logistics Center in the Airworthiness Sustainment Branch. I worked with one other cadet to evaluate the impact and significance of shock loading helicopter hoist cables. We will be continuing our research into this three-decade-old problem and will be working toward a solution. A device to operate in conjunction with the current shock-load-mitigating Slip Clutch, to identify hazardous and critical shock loads, as our senior capstone project.
