Profile bio

About William Devanny

I received my PhD from the University of California, Irvine in 2017 and I currently work as a Senior Lecturer in the Computer Science Department at the Ohio State University. I am very interested in opportunities where I can work with and learn modern technologies to complement my solid data structures and algorithms knowledge..My PhD research focused on graph algorithms touching on graph visualization and social network analysis. I also worked on computational biology and geometry projects. During my undergraduate work at Carnegie Mellon University, I helped write a publicly available software tool called DREM 2.0, which biologists can use to better analyze gene expression data. At UC Irvine, one of my research projects involved analyzing a family of permutations. Due to the number of permutations, initial versions of a program to generate and visualize this family would only work for permutations up to a size of roughly 12. We optimized our computation and modified it to use a high performance computing system which more than doubled the size of the permutations we could analyze. These research projects challenged me to think creatively and gave me a valuable flexibility in my work today. In addition to my research background, I have also had the privilege of teaching several undergraduate courses. Teaching demands effective communication of complicated ideas to others that have their own background of knowledge. My communication skills also benefited from co-teaching several courses which required coordinating and communicating with other instructors to work as a team.Outside of the academic development projects I have worked on, I also have experience in industry development environments from internships at Microsoft and Palantir. Both of these internships involved me working alongside a development team on a back-end data ingestion pipeline. At Microsoft, my team worked to create a system to monitor data quality and at Palantir, we worked to speed up data ingestion when updating old data.In these roles, I have been challenged to understand and dynamically attack a wide range of technical problems. My teaching and research experience have also given me practice in communicating highly technical ideas both to peers and non-experts.Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions I can help with. I would be happy to discuss any positions further.Kind regards,Will Devanny
