Delivery of degree modules at MQF Level 6 in Electrical and Electronics Engineering that include; - Plant and Process Control using MATLAB and Simulink for model-based design simulations and implementing practical exercises on real-world systems such as the PC managed (running VCL - Virtual Control Laboratory Software) MS15 DC Motor Control Module acting as 'Plant' from LJ Technical Systems; - Introduction to Industrial Robotics using Mitsubishi MELFA RV-2AJ-S12 5-axis Robot and CR1-571-S12 Controller, with COSIROP software and MELFA Basic IV Programming Language. The main responsibilities include;- train newly engaged apprentice students, technicians and engineers on the job- provide and implement cost-effective engineering solutions (mechanical & electrical) on assembly and test handling production equipment to reduce or eliminate customer complaints- modifying, upgrading and maintaining assembly and test handling production equipment to meet new customer's requirements- support international supplier's field service engineers in installing and commissioning new assembly and test handling I.C. (integrated circuit) production equipment- performing Buy-Off procedures and checks on newly installed production equipment prior to acceptance, including documentation and certification- ensuring that all production equipment conforms with local and international Health and Safety Standards- production equipment optimization to reduce Index Time- Project Leader and designer of various locally constructed semi-automated industrial engineering projects to support numerous ST Microelectronics assembly and testing production lines in improving safety, overall equipment efficiency (OEE), throughput i.e. units per hour (UPH), accuracy and better quality productsOther personal achievements include;- nominated 5S's champion representing the Equipment Engineering & Automation Department- employee of the month winner for January 2003- best technical suggestion winner for the third quarter of 2003

Equipment Engineering And Automation Department

- Hands-on experience on a wide range of I.C. (integrated circuit) Assembly, Testing & Finishing Handlers from International Suppliers such as Multitest, Advantest, Synax, Delta-edge Design, ICOS and SPEA to name a few- Thus providing extensive support to production line technicians and engineers especially in their daily fault-finding and troubleshooting stages in order to improve Machine UP-TIME- carrying out Preventive Maintenance procedures on most Test Handlers- experience in industrial vision systems- Designing and constructing in-house I.C. handling semi-automated production equipment. This involves a strong background of mechanical, electrical and electronics engineering design from both hardware and software perspectives. The work also included;- Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design, manufacture and soldering, selection of electronic components, purchase order, wiring, technical documentation, final system testing, training and monitoring for continuous improvement- Interfacing & Programming Microcontrollers using both Assembly and C languages- Interfacing & Programming Programmable Logic Controllers using all the IEC 61131-3 languages (LADDER-Logic Diagram (LAD), Function Block Diagram (FBD), Statement/Instruction List (IL), Sequential Function Charts (SFC) and Structured Text (ST))- Outstanding participation in the Employee Suggestion Scheme ESS

STMicroelectronics formerly known as SGS-THOMSON is a leading semiconductor industry in Malta that manufacture microcontrollers for a wide range of applications. LEAN and TQM driven principles were two main core values in the culture of Management Philosophy. During the first months of this apprenticeship we trainee students were given the opportunity to work in different production lines to be familiar with the various industrial manufacturing processes. Then I was assigned to form part of the Equipment Engineering & Automation Department. This department was composed from a small group of mechanical, electrical and electronics graduated, warranted and experienced Engineers with main aims, that of performing; - engineering work on currently installed production equipment; - commissioning of newly installed Hi-Tech production IC handling equipment for different products eg. TO-3, Flexiwatt, PDIP, PLCC, TQFP, BGA, MEMMS and other package types; - the design and construction from concept to completion of in-house automation to support all production lines mainly in improving safety, productivity and quality. Therefore, at the time of my apprenticeship, I have worked as an Assistant Engineer in performing the above mentioned work and gained valuable first-hand experience in mechanical, electrical and electronics engineering sectors.

Further to normal Lecturing duties, I also lead a team of Technicians, in doing Equipment Engineering plus refurbishing and upgrading of Automated Equipment sponsored to our Department from Industrial Partners, that will be used during the practical delivery in our VET (Vocational Education & Training) and Academic courses.
