I had a post-doctoral fellowship (1984-87) jointly at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and the Illinois State Water Survey. My doctorate is in geography and climatology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1984). I held an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship with the Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate at the National Academy of Sciences, 1983-84. I study the consequences of climate change for global food supplies and was twice selected to be a convening lead author of the chapter on food and fiber for Assessment Reports of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Third and Fourth Assessment Reports). I frequently lecture on the topic to a variety of audiences. The authors of the Fourth Assessment Report were co-awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former US Vice President Al Gore.
