While I have been on the Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs we have:* Joined in creating Delaware Joining Forces, which provides a online, one stop location for veterans and their families to connect with Federal, state and local agencies, as well as private businesses and organizations, for VA benefits, assistance in transitioning to civilian life; for employment, education, housing, counseling and anything else they may need. * Administer the Delaware Veterans Trust Fund, which provides emergency assistance for eligible veterans who need urgent help with such things as rent, car payment, utilities bills, etc.* Helped to establish programs and procedures that resulted in Delaware being recognized in 2016 as one of only 3 states that have effectively ENDED VETERANS HOMELESSNESS according to standards established by HUD. “In Delaware, no veteran has to be homeless for very long.”* Helped to conduct an Annual Veterans Stand Down, a day in which Veterans and Service Providers come together in one place. Veterans get a free breakfast and lunch; free VA medical check up; Free Dental Check up and Dental Care; connection with Veterans Service Officers; a Free haircut; clothing and health and comfort items; homeless vets get help with housing; vets can connect with counseling needs; veterans can meet with and get information from more than 100 federal, state and local agencies; and private businesses and volunteer agencies, all while being entertained by local artists and personalities. *Helped to raise Veterans Suicide awareness and to help organize the Governor’s Suicide Awareness Challenge which has led to creation of an action group uniting SAMSHA, VA and local, state and federal agencies, as well volunteers and private agencies to work to prevent Veteran Suicide.
