• Led a team of neuroscientists and technical support staff by providing guidance on the successful conceptualization, efficient implementation and results-oriented execution of research projects. Consulted junior scientists in the preparation of well-structured and well-argued scientific texts and coached four candidates to their PhD, three to their masters, and numerous interns to academia or industry. Results are published in esteemed global neuroscience journals.• Innovated and operationalized analysis techniques to examine neural coding strategies. State-of-the-art neural coding theories were tested on a rich 300 terabyte dataset by tailoring methods inspired from signal processing and machine learning to research the question – ‘How do neurons in our brain communicate to signal a visual object?’ Results refute well-established coding theories with implications for neuromorphic computing and enhanced medical knowledge of how the visual brain works.• Leading role in organizing the institutes’ global conference featuring ten internationally recognized computational neuroscience researchers. Due to my excellent verbal skills, I was entrusted with giving the introductory speech and was the go-to for drafting communications. I was involved with strategizing the theme and consulted on speakers who presented cutting-edge research to 200 participants.• Conceptualized a signal analysis toolbox that allows for the examination of a large set of brainwave data recorded by musicologists at the Max Planck Institute from people listening to structured (baroque classical) or unstructured (contemporary classical) music. It aims to assess the effect of music on optimal processing (criticality) and searches for neural signatures of tolerance for unstructured environments. The toolbox will stay with the musicologists for future applications

• Ran a two-year data collection exercise in an electrophysiology lab at the Max Planck Institute, ranked fourth globally in research output (Times Higher Education), to generate a rich dataset from the visual processing part of the brain. Its high quality underpinned not only my own research but also made contributions to the research of two collaborating labs.• Led the upgrade of our lab data acquisition infrastructure to acquire three terabytes a day, a tenfold increase, which continues to provide multiple researchers with the data management capacity crucial for testing neural coding theories. • Developed and implemented an automatic feature extraction algorithm to preprocess large-scale datasets by accessing 300+ processor cores on a high-performance cluster computer. • Collaborated with and worked at the Cerebral Institute in Natal, the premier neuroscience institute in Brazil, to correlate neural activity patterns with the physical network structure of cells.

• Developed innovative research ideas and managed expansive research projects that probed the neural coding strategies of attention. Employed and honed my interdisciplinary, intercultural and language skills by successfully collaborating with a team of physicists, medical doctors, mathematicians, biologists, computer scientists, and psychologists from six countries.• Taught five semesters of undergraduate introduction to applied neuroscience research at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research and the Technical University Darmstadt in both German and English, consulting and motivating several students to pursue a PhD in the field.• Advised two students on their master’s projects who continued to do their PhD.• Executed the highly demanding work of implanting research animals with state-of-the-art electrode technology and of training them to perform innovative behavioral tasks. My novel research design also formed the basis of the work of subsequent graduate students.

• Designed and executed experiments in the Cerebral Systems Research Group to investigate the neural underpinnings of pathologies, such as attentional deficit hemineglect and congenital deafness.• Excellent coaching skills led to repeat invitations to assist in teaching undergraduate statistics (three semesters) and introductory neuroscience (one semester).• Invited to collaborate with the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Germany (once) and The University of Western Ontario in Canada (twice) to familiarize resident researchers with state-of-the art neural deactivation technology to aid their assessment of recurrent interactions in neural networks.
