My research focuses on multi-disciplinary perspectives on the social and political implications of information and communication technologies, such as the Internet and related digital media. My most recent book is 'The Fifth Estate: The Power Shift of the Digital Age' (OUP forthcoming 2023). I am also writing an 'advanced introduction' to political communication. Specialties: Social scientific perspectives that can inform policy and practice on media, communication and information technologies. Current topics include the political dynamics of empowerment, political communication, the geopolitical consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war, and cyber security capacity building.
