I am a Professor in the School of Aging Studies at the University of South Florida. I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in clinical psychology of aging, or clinical geropsychology. I have focused my work on understanding and assisting family caregivers of older adults with chronic illness and disability, including Alzheimer's and other dementias, stroke, cancer, and terminal illness. Over a 40-year period, I have conducted studies of the effects of caregiving stress on mental and physical health; on identifying factors that tend to make caregivers either at risk or particularly resilient to caregiving stress; and developing and evaluating educational and counseling interventions to help caregivers cope with what can be a very demanding role. I often collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other professionals who are interested in studying family caregiving or improving the care they provide to families. Besides research, I teach courses about aging, mental health, and family caregiving. I also enjoy doing talks for professional and community groups about family caregiving. I have also been active in consulting with universities developing academic programs in gerontology, and on projects aimed at understanding or assisting family caregivers.
