I started CEI Electrical Service in 1982 and didn't realize the kind of ride I was in for. And wow, what a ride it's been! Back in 1982 my old employer ended up closing; so I opened CEI. Since then, business swings have been challenging, but we've managed to thrive. For me, I've done my best to make working at CEI rewarding. It's my view that for work to be rewarding, it's got to challenge us. Those "growth opportunities" often come when we least want them. Sometimes it's damned difficult. Sometimes I'd like to give up, but the challenges often force me to grow. This much I know, I'm nothing like I was 20 years ago. I suppose it's our dogged determination that's made us successful. We have great electricians and of course, great customers. Without both, I guess we'd just be another contractor, trying to make a buck. In 1985 I got my certification in infrared thermography, I believe I was the first in Arizona. That experience taught me a lot. Then in 1992, I was in an airplane crash and my life forever was changed. No more working as an electrician. Less back power and more brainpower. So more education was in store for me. Now I'm a lot older and my experiences have given me a chance to teach. I'm teaching Arc Flash and Shock Hazard classes. Most of the classes are in the western US, but last year I taught a class at a hospital in Tennessee. I hope my classes do what they're supposed to do; which is, teach electricians and others to appreciate the risks of arc flash and shock hazards. It's great to hear a student say "this is the first safety class I actually got something from. Now I know what I'm supposed to do!"​ Hearing that is pretty cool. Like I said, I'm older, but don't plan on stopping just yet. I enjoy my work, so why stop? It's meeting folks and learning that makes the work feel good.
