I was in the navy from 2001-2010 where I qualified to operate a nuclear reactor as well as do preventative and corrective maintenance on Instruments and Control systems vital to safe and Reliable nuclear power plant operation. I left the navy in 2010 and started my career in the civilian sector of nuclear power at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant where I continued my instrument and controls work. I became an Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) certified Instrument and Controls technician. After qualifying in the shop and working there for 3 years, I took an interest in control valves in the plant and soon moved on to our Component Monitoring Group where I work with and troubleshoot Air Operated Control Valves. (AOV) I obtained a certification from CRANE Nuclear and am a certified AOV technician and tester. I use complex test equipment to diagnose issues with valves including packing issues, seat load issues, spring rates, or any number of other possible issues that can arise on an AOV. I Also maintain my IC knowledge as the valves I work mostly with have remotely operated positioners and current to pressure transducers which operate our systems. There are also hand controllers which need work that allow our operators to remotely control these valves from the control room as necessary.
