EcoCAR Mobility Challenge is a GM sponsored program to turn a stock 2019 Chevrolet Blazer into a hybrid-electric vehicle capable of level 2 autonomy. I worked on the Controls/Systems Modeling and Simulation team (CSMS) to develop the controls systems of the vehicle as well as produce simulations to predict changes in vehicle behavior. We partner with the Propulsion Systems Integration and Connected and Automated Vehicle teams to deliver a fully functional, consumer acceptable vehicle.• Design architecture team member responsible for design optimization and powertrain components selection.• Authored Architecture Definition Overview proposal that detailed three powertrain options for the vehicle.• Developed a control scheme and vehicle plant model capable of simulating vehicle performance with two electric motors.• Wrote a MATLAB script to automate simulation process over various types of powertrain setups.• Utilized the Simulink Requirements tool to generate documentation that characterized various features of the vehicle model.• Developed guidelines for conducting Finite Element Analysis as part of the Systems Safety Team.• Conducted training on use of MATLAB/Simulink and NX 9.0 Routing software.
Development Intern
Development Intern responsible for the simulation development for the THAAD weapon system.• Developed algorithms for implementation of classified models involving the AN/TPY-2 Radar.• Developed analysis tools using Octave environment.• Optimized existing algorithms using the Octave C++ API resulting in significantly reduced runtime.
Process Engineering Intern
Process Engineering Intern responsible for manufacturing process efficiency studies for an upcoming engine assembly line for Toyota Motor Manufacturing. Overall objective was to reduce processes, increase quality, and maintain safety standards. A final report was presented to the plant president and executive committee.• Conducted comprehensive review of 8 different manufacturing lines totaling 85 processes during start-up phase.• Implemented process design changes that reduced process time, improved process ergonomics, and increased product quality.• Eliminated 3 processes during the internship. Plans to eliminate 5 additional processes were submitted but not completed during the tenure of the internship due to approval time. Toyota estimates a savings of $560,000 per year due to the elimination of these processes.• Conducted presentations weekly to the plant’s general manager on findings and an evaluation of potential improvements.• Participated in Standardized Work – Kaizen Program which teaches members how to diagnose problems and inefficiencies in the production and assembly lines.• Digitized production time records to allow for future use.• Presented final report to plant president and board.

EcoCAR 3 was a GM sponsored program to turn a stock 2016 Chevrolet Camaro into a hybrid-electric vehicle. I worked on the Mechanical and System Modeling and Simulation teams that provided engineering solutions to the various systems of the vehicle. We partnered with the Electrical, Innovation, and Controls teams to produce a fully functional, consumer acceptable series-parallel plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle. The University of Alabama finished third out of sixteen teams across North America. Based on my contribution I was selected to represent the University of Alabama EcoCAR 3 team on a trip to GM facilities and the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit, Michigan.System Modeling and Simulation:• Co-developer of a comprehensive mathematical hybrid powertrain simulation model using MATLAB/Simulink software including Stateflow.• Tested and tuned vehicle supervisory control software in SiL (Software in the Loop) environment using a closed-loop platform containing vehicle plant model simulations.• Developed driver model capable of coasting propulsion behavior to further refine and tune vehicle control strategy in SiL environment. Tested and documented fault mitigation and powertrain safety code.Mechanical:• Used NX 9.0 Routing software to design two complete coolant system concepts, including pump and reservoir packaging, for the vehicle’s 30 kW Denso electric belted alternator starter (BAS) system and 75 kW Parker electric traction motor. Assisted with coolant system installation.• Designed and implemented a custom mount for an AC/DC power inverter to be made from an aluminum carbon-fiber mesh. Additional design challenges included accounting for coolant lines, HV and LV routing, thermal and spacing constraints, as well as various slots and other accessibility features.
