Electrical Engineer - Electric Vehicle R&D

Engineering summer internship with NiFT, a small EV-focused R&D startup in the Detroit area. The team consisted of 4 mechanical engineers, 2 software engineers, and myself. Major team projects included the development of a prototype electric hypercar and the EV conversion of a 2011 Lotus Evora. As the only electrical engineer in the company, I was able to apply my skills to provide a non-mechanical perspective on these projects. This included the design and implementation of an analog high-voltage discharge control module for regulating power flow on an EV. This circuit was independently produced and developed as NiFT's first in-house circuit design, and is now being sold commercially on their website. Additional EV tasks include the review and a simplified summation of the wiring diagrams of the Evora, pinpointing crucial systems for EV conversion and recommendations for how to do so.The latter half of the internship was primarily focused upon the development of an automotive interior light control module. This module was designed to control LED light strips and included features such as CAN bus communication, low quiescent current (<50uA), reverse polarity/high voltage protection, and error sensing and reporting. After design and breadboard prototyping I then implemented this design into an enclosed PCB. This product was successfully implemented into a small number of prototype electric vehicles, and is now being sold commercially by NiFT. The internship concluded with the design of a wrist-mounted position indicator meant to assist children with learning how to shoot basketballs. Lights on the circuit would indicate the arm's position and guide the child towards the proper form. This watch-sized circuit was designed and had a working PCB laid out in less than a week due to the end of the internship period rapidly approaching. Overall this internship provided great professional experience and I am grateful for the NiFT team for providing it.
