Following a two year spell working in a shipyard after leaving school, I went to sea as a Deck Cadet with Denholm Ship Management in 1979, sailing on a variety of vessels world-wide including Tankers, Bulk Carriers and General Cargo Vessels. Gaining my Second Mates License in 1984, I then sailed mainly on Roll-On / Roll-Off cargo vessels and container vessels until 1988 when I started working on Anchor Handling Supply vessels in the North Sea with BUE Marine, going on to get my Chief Officer’s License.In 1990 I moved on to Drilling Rigs, initially as Control Room Operator on Sonat and Transocean semi-submersible rigs in the North Sea and then latterly as Barge Master with Foramer Drilling off Africa and the Far East.In 1996, I attained my Master’s License and was employed by P&O European Ferries as Master with their Irish Sea operations, including High-Speed passenger and freight ferries, eventually working in the office as Marine & Safety Manager. By 2001, I had moved to the Shetland Islands and worked for five years as Marine Superintendent for the Shetland inter-island Ferry Service. Moving to Houston in 2006 as a Marine Consultant for London Offshore, I was mainly involved in casualty investigations and salvage operations on behalf of P&I Clubs. I joined Helix Energy Solutions Group in 2008, working initially under the Subsea Construction Group as ISM Coordinator and transfered to WellOps US in 2012 to head up the Regulatory, Safety & Training department.After working for 13 years with Helix, I am now back in the UK and back in Shetland as Marine Superintendent with Shetland Islands Council.
