Part-time Director at the Bayswater Institute (BI), seeking to build upon the range of expertise available in the Institute to explore ways for optimising the effective adoption of new and emerging technologies into organisations, with a particular focus initially on health and social care.The Bayswater Institute, founded in 1990, seeks to help integrate human and social considerations with economic and technical ones in the design and development of organisations and work. Research, action research, systematic reviews, and consultancy are particular strengths of the Institute and these approaches are used to further organisational development which reflects and integrates the range of values (human, technical and economic) espoused by the organisation and its members. This involves understanding organisations from a wide-range of perspectives including drawing on anthropology, psychology, social psychology, sociology and psychodynamics to build understanding of the whole system. This also includes considering the needs and development of people in the design and implementation of technical and managerial systems and using education and training to further these ideas.Recent research project activity includes being a partner in a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) funded project to explore opportunities for using communications technologies to deliver new models of care for those with Learning Difficulties. The BOLD-TC project (Better Outcomes for People with Learning Difficulties - Transforming Care) was a multi-partner project with a commercial lead but also involving a Metropolitan Borough Council, a CCG, and a range of third sectors organisations. Other current projects include working with an SME undertaking a phase two SBRI funded project and we have recently succeeded in being awarded funding from the Health Foundation's efficiency programme for an innovative collaborative project exploring ways of delivering community care more efficiently.

Consultancy and research supporting the optimal translation of innovative healthcare ideas which have promise for improving the delivery of healthcare.Acting as an independent consultant, working with clinicians, universities, funding agencies and business to assist in the identification of effective and cost-effective innovative products and services and seeking to identify ways to accelerate their translation into the healthcare sector.Worked on several projects for SMEs including ones involved with controlling healthcare associated infections, technologies to support those with Parkinson's disease, diagnostics for antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and statins. Expert assessor for Innovate UK and for the European Commission. Expert panel member for public health research calls run by the European Commission in areas including Health Technology Assessment, Comparative Effectiveness, Ambient Assisted Living, and for the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI). Expert assessor for several Innovate UK programmes including SMART, Biomedical Catalyst, Health and Life Sciences, and the Antimicrobial Resistance call.

HoIP CIC works to develop a body of knowledge around, and encourage the uptake of, personal healthcare and wellness services delivered via internet/web technologies. It provides consultancy, research, innovation broking, collaboration and project management services. It is involved in a number of regional, national and European research collaborations, working with industry (from global infrastructure providers to local SMEs), the third sector, local authorities, academia and trade associations. Overall strategic lead for public health research and lead for eHealth and health technology related research

* In addition to my main role as Chief Research Officer for Public Health, I took a lead role in developing an innovation programme during the early stages of the evolving DH R&D strategy ‘Best Research for Best Health’. * Responsibility for scoping out, launching and running in its early stages, the new NIHR ‘invention for innovation (i4i)’ programme. ( successfully launched at the QE2 in July 2008).* worked closely with the Technology Strategy Board (now Innovate UK) to establish two major joint programme : The Assisted Living Innovation Platform (ALIP) and the Rapid Identification and Detection of Infectious Agents (DIIA) innovation platform. * Led on scoping out and running a pilot for a new Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) in the area of Health Care Associated Infections.

* Public Health Research Team leader * Scientific Secretary to a Research Advisory Group on antimicrobial resistance. * Led on implementing a major new research programme in the area of antimicrobial resistance * Led on developing a range of research to address public health concerns associated with air travel (including research to investigate the possible link between air travel and Deep Vein Thrombosis, working with the World Health Organisation to establish an international programme of epidemiological research, and research on the aircraft cabin air quality). * Developed major research programmes in air pollution, skin cancer and ehealth (telemedicine, telecare and interactive digital TV).

* Lead for a range of environmental health areas including ultra violet radiation and skin cancer, air pollution, and environmental oestrogens. * Responsible for scoping, consulting, and commissioning major research programmes in each of these areas.* Led on developing a case to build research capability in the broad area of eHealth, in particular in relation to research on telehealth and the evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of these technologies.

* Theme co-ordinator for policy research on health interventions and on environmental health. This involved the strategic planning of the content of research within these two themes, and in particular in managing research in the following topics: cancer, diabetes, information technology, osteoporosis, minimally invasive surgery, biotechnology, and genetics. Responsible for a portfolio of over 50 research projects including: • An evaluation of Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS);• A large multidisciplinary evaluation of liver transplantation;• A large epidemiological study of Radon and lung cancer • An evaluation of Continuous hyper-fractionated accelerated radiotherapy (CHART); • The Tamoxifen prevention trial.

* Research management responsibilities covering a number of areas including health technologies, cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis. * During this period I also played a major role in setting up an Advisory Committee on Health Technology Assessment. It was on the basis of this work that the DH Health Technology Assessment programme was set up. This now forms a central part of the research programme of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

Worked within the office of the Government's Chief Scientific Advisor. Secretary to the Advisory Council for Science and Technology (ACOST) which included responsibilities for setting up and running an Emerging Technologies Committee and its sub-committees on life sciences, advanced materials, Advanced Manufacturing Technologies and expert systems. Responsible for producing and publishing major policy reports on Biotechnology, Advanced Manufacturing Technologies, Expert Systems, and support for the Medical Device Industry.

I worked in the Diagnostic Imaging Group involved in a wide range of areas in particular CT and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
