Scientific Technician II working in the Wenatchee River basin. Season was divided into three main projects: Aquaculture and hatchery/wild interactions, juvenile monitoring and adult monitoring. Aquaculture work included: pre-release sampling of hatchery x hatchery and wild x wild juvenile steelhead at Chiwawa River Hatchery, pre-transfer sampling of juvenile chinook at Eastbank Hatchery, brood stock collection of adult steelhead at Dryden Dam, and spawning summer chinook at Eastbank Hatchery. Juvenile work was conducted at the two rotary screw traps operated by the field office. Tasks included the daily maintenance/operations of a rotary screw trap, processing fish caught in traps, preparing mark/recapture groups to help determine trap efficiency, and setting and checking minnow traps. Adult monitoring was completed by conducting efficiency spawning ground surveys for summer chinook. This was accomplished from tracking redd life, as well as processing caucuses of pre-spawn/spawned out summer chinook. Other adult monitoring work included tracking steelhead using radio telemetry. Daily tasks performed throughout season: pit-tagging juvenile and adult salmonids, collecting biological data (fork lengths, POH, scales, DNA,etc.), directing snouts to collect/read coded wire tags, and entering/double checking data into Microsoft Access and Excel. Equipment used: pit tag readers, pit tag guns and syringes, coded wire tag readers (T-Wands and V-Detectors), safely operating pontoon rafts, truck and trailer, fish anesthetics (MS-222 and Aquis), handheld GPS, and radio receiver for tagged steelhead.

Scientific Technician II conducting spawning ground surveys for chinook, coho and chum salmon on the Elochoman, Skamakawa and Grays Rivers in southwest Washington. Spawning ground surveys consisted of identifying and counting live and dead salmon, as well as redds. Carcasses were also sampled during spawning ground surveys. Biological data collected includes; scales, DNA samples and otoliths. Most surveys were conducted on foot, but experienced conducting surveys by rafting, as well. Other duties included day to day operation of fish weirs on Elochoman and Grays Rivers. Data collected from live adult salmonids included; species, sex, fork length, floy tag insertion, left operable punch, DNA samples, CWT reading, and scales. Assisted with broodstick collection for chum salmon on the West Fork Grays River. Assisted with chum spawning at Grays River Hatchery. Assisted with picking dead chum eggs from spawning egg trays in hatchery.

Tillery, North Carolina

Worked to determine population estimates for anadromous fishes of the Roanoke River, specifically, american shad, hickory shad and stripped bass. Sampling techniques included using a DIDSON multi-beam sonar and Sounds Metrics software to take underwater videos from seven down looking sites and two banks sites of the river channel. Upstream from the DIDSON sites shock boat electrofishing and drift gill nets were used to help determine the species composition. When the head biologist was not with the other technician and myself, I was in charge of the other technician and making sure all the daily tasks were completed. Field work was from March-May 2014. I spent the summer months (June-August 2014) in the office going through all of the DIDSON files and counted the fishes swimming upstream. The Sound Metrics software allowed for me to measure the fish captured with the DIDSON sonar. I then divided the fish by 50mm increments into an Excel spreadsheet.

Twisp, Washington

Worked, in a seasonal temporary position, as a Scientific Technician II for fall of 2014. Duties included backpack electrofishing and PIT tagging salmoniod species of the Methow River and its tributaries in the Upper Columbia River Basin. Assisted with sampling adult salmonids at Wells Dam Hatchery. Assisted with daily screw trap operations for the last couple weeks of the season after electrofishing was completed.
