William McCarthy is a founder in the sustainability space, an adjunct professor at Florida State University, and an outdoor enthusiast who is crazy about silent sports. Three and a half years ago, he Co-founded Dunsel's Sailbags, which has diverted thousands of pounds of waste fabric from landfills. Dunsel's was created to up-cycle marine textile waste into consumer products and show that it is possible to create highly functional and long-lasting products from what usually would end up in landfills. Since the Industrial Revolution, the focus has been on producing more. With Dunsel's, William has questioned how it's possible to take what already exists and create value for the customer with products that are inherently more unique, durable, and sustainable than what is currently on the market. As a professor, he takes the knowledge he is learning in the field in real-time and converts it into relatable and impactful lessons for student entrepreneurs to think about ideation and execution of their own business goals. His overarching objective is to enable students to start businesses at a young age and not be fearful of the unknown through using his ongoing experience as a young entrepreneur in an unexplored area of operating a sustainable business. The class work teaches strategies and techniques that can be taken directly out of the classroom the same day and used to create revenue, test business ideas, approach problems consciously, and navigate the emotional side of being a founder.William McCarthy's deep-rooted commitment to environmental preservation stems from his profound love for cycling, running, camping, and all outdoor sports. His personal connection to nature fuels his drive to protect it, making his dedication to sustainability more than just a professional pursuit but a deeply personal mission. "When you spend enough time finding solitude in the woods and on the water, a deeper appreciation for trying to protect it grows. There is nothing like enjoying a few days out of cell phone service and far away from people getting in touch with the outdoors. When you see what humans are doing by tearing down forests and polluting our oceans, it just makes me so angry and charges me up to find solutions to these unnecessary problems."
