  Prior to his retirement on June 1, 2023, Bill worked in PennStuart’s Abingdon, Virginia office and was a member of the firm’s Insurance Defense and Professional Liability practice group. Most recently, Bill’s practice was focused on the handling of plaintiff’s personal injury and medical malpractice cases. He successfully obtained several recoveries in excess of one million dollars on behalf of his clientsBill’s career of more than 40 years was devoted to litigation in state and federal courts throughout Virginia. He tried more than 100 jury trials and resolved many cases via mediation and arbitration proceedings. He handled the defense of many complex and catastrophic personal injury and wrongful death cases. He had extensive experience in the defense of professional liability claims, both legal and medical. He also had extensive experience in the defense of nursing homes and long term care facilities and their employees. He represented several health care professionals in licensure matters before the Virginia Department of Health Professions.Bill is a strong proponent of attorney professionalism and ethics and served for more than 20 years as part of the Virginia State Bar’s attorney disciplinary system including as Chair of the Disciplinary Board which is charged with handling the most serious cases of lawyer misconduct. He also served on the Executive Committee of the Virginia State Bar Council, the governing body of the VSB.
