As the Deputy Commissioner for Higher Education in the NYS Education Department, I serve as part of the senior leadership team for policy and regulatory oversight of NYS Colleges and Universities. With over 25 years experience managing public and private education and evaluation initiatives, and a unique combination of assessment, accreditation and higher education specialties in both government and higher education settings, my experience includes state, national, and international education, evaluation, and accreditation. Our OHE office administers programs and provides services to higher education institutions, professional educators, students, elected officials, and federal, state and local educational agencies. We also coordinate New York State's higher education system, encompassing 240+ colleges and universities and serving over one million undergraduate and graduate students. OHE leads efforts to promote access to higher education for all New Yorkers, including administering State grant programs that provide access for under-represented, under-served, and first generation college students. The OHE team has also been instrumental in re-making and re-imagining the teacher certification system in NYS by updating regulations, streamlining processes and technology, and leading efforts to ensure a healthy teacher and school leader pipeline.Prior to the Deputy Commissioner appointment, I served as the Bureau Chief for Professional Education, responsible for the offices which evaluated and approved all professional licensure related higher education programs at NYS universities, in addition to reviewing individual education credentials associated with licensure in the 55 Title VIII professions in NYS, including nurses, doctors, engineers, and mental health professionals. I continue to serve on the Committee on the Professions license and restoration panel.
