Current research focuses on Chinese economic statecraft, with a particular emphasis on developing countries and the Global South, and Beijing's use of economic coercion and inducements to forward the CCP's geopolitical interests.Received a Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania, with subfields of International Relations and Comparative Politics. Research investigated alignment decisions in Southeast Asia, U.S.-China relations, and East Asian security issues. Dissertation includes analysis of alignment decisions in Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Cambodia in the post-Cold War period.Worked for three years at the Council on Foreign Relations under then C.V. Starr Senior Fellow and Director for Asia Studies. Holds a B.A. from Middlebury College in International Studies (with concentrations in East Asian Studies, Chinese, and Political Science) and an M.A. in Political Science (en route) from the University of Pennsylvania.
