Contracted by Industry New Zealand (now NZTE), a Crown Entity within the Ministry of Economic Development, to undertake a scoping study of the biotechnology industry in New Zealand. The study was based upon a number of structured and unstructured interviews with a range of key players in the biotechnology industry including Government, Universities, Crown Research Institutes and both large and small private sector businesses. The main objective of the study was to highlight key issues and challenges facing the successful development of the biotechnology industry within New Zealand. The resultant document was published by Industry New Zealand and used as a platform for discussing the major issues facing industry stakeholders.

• Expanded the company from a 15 employee office to 45 employees and four regional centres, successfully managing the change within the corporate environment• Restored a loss-making company to profitability and eliminated its retained deficit• Established a strong relationship with the ANZ Bank and worked closely with its senior management to develop numerous joint business opportunities• Initiated and managed a change in strategic direction from one of institutional stockbroking to one of retail investment and advisory services in order to maximise the advantages in being owned by a large bank.• Proposed and developed new products directed towards niche markets, including the establishment of an investment service to Asian immigrants, the first and most successful of its kind in New Zealand• Reoriented the company towards a technology focus, both internally and through implementation of state-of-the-art computer and communications systems, and externally by linking customer service with computerised access to account and market information.
