I am presently one of two teachers at a small alternative high school in Dillingham, Alaska. I work with “at risk” native youth who are significantly behind in their studies. I teach primarily math and science, however, I am involved in the teaching of nearly all subjects across the curriculum. I have been intimately involved in curriculum development as well as advising youth on social, employment and academic issues. In the past three years our school has accounted for between 25 and 30% of all graduates from Dillingham City Schools while serving about 12% of all students. In addition to my teaching duties I took over the day to day administrative duties in the 2009-10 school year. As part of these duties I am responsible for the day to day operations, staffing meetings, purchase requests, professional development and State mandated reporting. I am also part of the district administrative team and drop-out prevention team and report directly to the Assistant Superintendent and give monthly reports to the School Board. Additionally, I have attended regional conferences covering technology, special education, and teachers’ association concerns. Finally, I have served on State-Wide review teams for the review of items on the state High School Graduation Qualifying Exams in both math and science.
