Professor Of Gender & Women'S Studies, Founding Director Of Human Rights Practice ProgramUniversity Of Arizona Jan 2013 - PresentTucson, Arizona AreaI have led the development of the fully online program in Human Rights Practice. In less than four years, we have created an MA, several graduate certificates (Gender-Based Violence, Human Rights and Technology, and Human Rights and Documentary Media), and a BA program. All of these are based on our one-of-a-kind pedagogical model which features 1) extensive interaction between students and leading practitioners from around the world through several video conferences in each course (over 420 video guests from 60 different countries so far); 2) Problem-Based Learning Beyond Borders (PBL-BB, see Simmons 2019) where students in almost every class work with faculty and community members on real-world problems brought to us by activists and NGOs; and 3) numerous additional opportunities for students to work on real-world projects with community members through independent studies, internships, and capstones. We have enrolled 160 students in our MA program, and we have already had 94 graduates. We have signed MOUs for joint programming with universities in six countries, and 17 leading human rights stakeholders serve on our international advisory boards. We have 60 program faculty from 20 different disciplines and ten different colleges across the university.

President, Board Of DirectorsLost Boys Center For Leadership Development Aug 2013 - PresentPhoenix, Arizona, United StatesOverseeing one of the largest organizations working with the Lost Boys from Sudan, we have successfully changed our mission twice and dealt with numerous fundraising challenges. Currently we are centering an invaluable archive of 17,000 testimonies gathered 30 years ago while the Lost Boys were in refugee camps in East Africa. We are raising funds, connecting individuals to their testimonial records, building an educational center in Juba, South Sudan, and developing a remembrance project to advance peace in South Sudan. -
Special Consultant To Dean Of Global CampusSan Diego State University Aug 2021 - Feb 2022San Diego Metropolitan AreaServed mainly as a liaison between the Global Campus and academic programs on the main campus. I worked with the Dean to develop a sustainable organizational structure for the academic side of SDSU GC that included the responsibilities for a new associate dean of academic affairs for Global Campus. Provided an academic perspective on marketing analyses and budget models, recognizing that traditional market data and budget formulas are useful but incomplete for mapping opportunities, student interest, and potential collaborations. Began nurturing interdisciplinary faculty teams willing to collaborate to develop innovative online programs, including exploring reward structures to make participation in Global Campus more enticing for faculty, department chairs, and deans. -

Founding Director, Ma In Social Justice And Human RightsArizona State University Aug 2007 - Jun 2011Phoenix, Arizona, United StatesThe master’s degree program at ASU was based on an innovative learner-centered curriculum that emphasized team-taught, problem-based, and community-embedded seminars as well as student internships, and the infusion of virtual lectures via videoconferencing from around the world. The curriculum brought university expertise to real-world community problems and created engaged interdisciplinary research teams of faculty, students, and community members. Our students studied and worked with community members on numerous issues, including indigenous rights in Oaxaca, fair trade between the United States and Mexico; violence against women; ethical dilemmas faced by local NGOs; environmental justice in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina; and preventative health among disadvantaged youth. One semester, a course called Community-Embedded Seminar in Social Justice and Human Rights created a local NGO to combat human trafficking. -
