I am a 4th year PhD researcher of evolutionary biology at the University of Exeter, currently investigating the evolutionary origins of ageing and reproductive asymmetry. My other academic interests are in extended evolutionary theory, philosophy of science, and the use of scientific thinking in wider contexts.My PhD is 'The Evolution and Mechanisms of Unicellular Ageing', intending to be at the forefront of an emerging field, with relevance to evolutionary theory and biomedicine. I work as part of the department of Health and Life Sciences at the University of Exeter, Penryn, supervised by Andrew Young, Stefano Pagliara, Angus Buckling, and Bram Kuijper. Alongside my research background, I have experience in lecturing, teaching, and research consultancy for universities and other organisations. I lecture on quantitative research skills at the University of Exeter alongside other forms of teaching support in bioscience, data science, mathematics, geography, and environmental science. I also provide research, data science, and statistical consultancy for a wide variety of projects based off quantitative data. I am currently offering part-time freelance work alongside my research.About my PhD:Developing on my master's work, my PhD is aiming to conclusively show whether single-cell life exhibits ageing and the evolutionary and mechanistic reasons as to why. This multi-disciplinary project combines evolutionary biology, microbiology, and mathematics using techniques such as microfluidics, machine learning, Bayesian statistics, and evolutionary simulations. The findings of this PhD will have application to fundamental evolutionary theory alongside significance to biomedicine through its relation to human germ/stem cell ageing and antibiotic resistance. I am currently in year four of this project, supported by the BBSRC SWBio doctoral training programme.
