About William Speller

I am an economist and programme manager with ten years of experience in the UN and over fifteen working with developing countries. I firmly believe in the development trajectories envisaged by the Sustainable Development Goals and I am committed to working with member countries and the private sector to develop tailored solutions which will serve to ensure a just transition to low-carbon and climate resilient development that protects and restores ecosystems.Prior to joining the UN, I worked as a macro-financial economist at Bank of England, evaluating threats to the global financial system, was desk officer for China and contributed to reforms of the financial system. I was seconded to Reserve Bank of India to lead a team of economists in establishing a new financial stability unit. At UNCTAD, I analyzed and designed policies to enhance the socio-economic and environmental impact of agricultural investments produced research on financing for development.In my present role at UNEP, I lead country applications of natural capital accounting (NCA) and the economics of ecosystems and biodiversity (TEEB) to policy areas such as ecosystem restoration, ecological compensation schemes, protected area management, food systems transformation and land using planning decisions.I am an articulate, analytical thinker, with strong written and oral presentation skills. I have regularly advised and negotiated with country governments and the private sector. I am experienced manager, adept at navigating the political and administrative challenges of the United Nations system.I have contributed to major publications, including the Bank of England Financial Stability Report, UNCTAD's World Investment Report and a series of policy briefs on agriculture and environmental issues for the World Bank and UNEP. I have developed, organised and run training programmes on technical areas and events at major international conferences.
