Professor Sprigg is architect of the U.S. National Climate Program and principal architect for updating the NWS Climate Prediction Center. He led the U.S. delegation for Working Group II, Impact Assessment, for the first Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report. He is founding director of the Pan America Center for the World Meteorological Organization Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory System. He is Professor Emeritus, University of Arizona, and Principal Officer of Science Policy Consultants, LLC. Dr. Sprigg’s team has created a research-tested, operational-ready airborne dust forecast capability, demonstrating how risks of Valley fever and other respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses can be reduced. A pollen-forecast system is under test. With a long held interest to advance interdisciplinary research and science policy – he assembles international, world-class experts in diverse fields to further science in decision making and integrates the scientific disciplines necessary to understand and adapt in a daily weather environment and a variable climate.Recent Research Nature’s Aerosols & Air Quality: Detecting & Monitoring Sources and Simulating & Forecasting Emissions, Dispersal and Consequences; now with a George Mason University led NASA project: "Satellite-aided regional dust forecasting for Valley fever surveillance , highway accident prevention, and air-quality management in the Southwestern United States."Climate PolicyNational & International Science Policy Concerning Climate Variability & ChangeArchitect: U.S. National Climate Program -- incorporating ocean, land, ice, atmosphere and solar sciences, human resources, supporting infrastructures and management systems into missions and goals to understand and predict Earth’s climate system and the consequences of change. Ensured that the Program’s “climate time scales” would embrace El Nino and “greenhouse” warming. The Program plan reaffirmed that climate and its consequences were global and solutions would ultimately be international. Formed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Program -- initiating the Nation’s Experimental Climate Forecast Program, the Annual Climate Diagnostics Workshops (the 42nd in 2017) and the Nation’s Regional Climate Centers.
