Als Adviseur Faunazaken & Projectleider Kennis en Onderzoek Fauna at BIJ12 leid ik het onderzoek dat BIJ12 laat uitvoeren naar faunaschade. Ik vertaal dit onderzoek naar voorlichting richting de praktijk en beleidsadvisering richting provincies.

In this project we aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from farming by using a qualitative… Show more In my current position I work on two differen interdisciplinary projects where I apply my skills in landscape ecology, environmental science, eco-informatics, environmental psychology and genetics.In the first project, I focus on reducing the impact of agriculture on the environment at the interdisciplinary interface of environmental science, social psychology and communication science. In this project we aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from farming by using a qualitative approach to study how the information provision from a tool for farmers that calculate their greenhouse gas emissions can be improved to establish an increased uptake of mitigation measures. This study serves as a starting point for building quantitative psychological models and to design and test interventions to increase the uptake of greenhouse gas mitigation measures by farmers.In my second project I combine landscape ecology, eco-informatics, geographic information systems and genetic approaches to identify genes that help plant populations to adapt to critically high or low levels of nutrients or toxic compounds in soil. In this study we use a Genome Wide Association (GWA) approach to gain a better understanding of how natural plant populations have evolved over thousands of years to grow in mineral nutrient poor soils or soils with elevated levels of toxic elements like sodium, cadmium or arsenic. The improvement of the efficacy of AES in increasing the species richness in agricultural… Show more Working on my PhD project “The ecology and psychology of agri-environment schemes” within the research programme “Nature Conservation on Farmland”.One of the key policy instruments implemented in Europe to conserve the biodiversity on farmland are Agri-Environment Schemes (AES). However, over the last 10 years the efficacy of AES in conserving biodiversity in agricultural areas has been questioned. The improvement of the efficacy of AES in increasing the species richness in agricultural areas is both an ecological and social challenge; For a successful implementation of measures with a sound ecological background the willingness of farmers to perform these measures is inevitably needed to have these measures widely implemented. The goal of my PhD-project is collect vegetation data on AES in ditch banks to extract ecological processes that are currently hampering the effectiveness of AES to conserve plant species. Based on our findings we can recommend improvements to make current AES. more effective in conserving plant species in ditch banks.Next, in order to have our recommendation implemented by farmers we will use quantitative psychological models to study what psychological constructs underlie farmers' motivation to take up AES. Based on this model we can recommend customised strategic communication strategies to motivate farmers to take up effective agri-environmental measures to conserve biodiversity. Show less
