Promoted public safety and global trust in Microsoft through principled advocacy and compliance with government demands. My role on the Law Enforcement and National Security (LENS) team evolved during my 6+ years on the team, as I grew from individual contributor (senior site reliability engineer) to a leadership role that leveraged skills often associated with each TPM, EM, and architect.As TPM: Directed and managed projects throughout the full project life cycle including scoping, estimation, planning, scheduling, overseeing the development and testing process, and delivering the final product. Communicated project direction, approach, priorities, events, and status to all project resources stakeholders. As EM: Managed a team of 15+ engineers spread across the US and Dublin, following agile methodologies such as Azure semester planning and Scrum, while delivering software, automation, bug fixes, and other improvements on a two-week development cycle. In addition, managed/owned on-call rotations of 20+ engineers, ensuring SLAs were met and maintaining high-quality service delivery. As engineer/architect: Quickly became the subject matter expert for several inventory and compliance services and cross-trained a distributed team across multiple regions, including both the US and Dublin. Contributed to engineering systems, data platforms, infrastructure, and knowledge management, optimizing team efficiency and productivity. Led the design and implementation of scalable Azure systems enabling Microsoft to respond to global legal demands for customer information, utilizing .NET Framework, .NET Core, Angular, TypeScript, and various Azure technologies including Functions, Web Apps, Storage, Search, Key Vault, Service Bus, etc. Supported 24/7/365 uptime through on-call engineer rotations and coordinated regular releases across a broad portfolio of systems using Azure DevOps release management, PowerShell, Octopus, and other release technologies.

Availability and Scale - Designed and implemented a more resilient infrastructure, to allow the company to meet 300% YOY growth. Headed up the team that rolled out a new database architecture, without customer or site impact. Worked on everything from hardware orders, server setup, and configuration, to writing the PowerShell script which performed the data conversion. Worked directly with Microsoft SQL Server development team on an HADR latency investigation. Responsible for all liaison and research. The result set included features and improvements driven directly into the SQL Server 2012/2014/ and 2016 product. Monitoring and service stability – Spear-headed a project to migrate site monitoring service from an on-site hardware solution to the Azure cloud. This greatly improved the overall scalability, availability, performance, and operational cost of the service. Led/Implemented multiple service improvement projects - Fusion I/O drive swaps and rollbacks, 10GB NIC swaps on all production SQL Servers, remapped TOR switches to A/B FEX devices, SQL Server install and server configuration, tweaked multi sub-net fail over to match OSPF timer configurations for x-dc resiliency, GPO architecture/implementation, and custom code automation.

07/2012 – 05/2013: CRM Dynamics Online (500 SQL Server Databases, 1000+ Web Servers)Developed multi-step, multi-release roadmap to remove hard-coded dependencies on FE to BE scale groups to improve resource-pooling/dynamic-allocation. Included a self-describing configuration that enables object-level analysis. Generated high-ROI plan to move backup/restore process from local data storage with tape management to Azure blob store, allowing end consumers to access and restore their DBs without manual CRM team intervention.2010 – 7/2012: Windows Phone (120 SQL Server Databases, 350 Web Servers)Evaluated custom in-memory PRS cache solution. Provided technical alternatives to prevent/reduce service outage scenarios, including the use of in-memory cache (known technology with a built-in support team) while minimizing team costs. Designed/built a capacity reporting system (CRS) for automatically collecting server/network level data and comparing to defined KPIs across multiple services. Created QRS: QoS collection, alerting/alarming, and BI environment; an extensible platform easily attached to any in-house monitoring system, requiring minimal changes to support.2008 – 2010: Windows Live Services (192 SQL Servers, 2000+ Web Servers)Deployed two new large-scale services: Social Update Platform and Profiles. Both services required significant cross team collaboration, lengthy hardware/network configuration, and rapid code deployments. Independently owned BE management of large-scale deployments (768 FSS or 1536 core SQLServer databases), and operated 2000 FE server cloud.

Provided Oracle and SQL Server support for multiple in-house, 3rd party, and custom applications. Installed, configured, and tested Windows-based SAP Solution Manager Environment. Planned and completed large-scale Oracle DB upgrade from 8.1.7.4 to 9.2.0.8. Ported 3rd party applications between OS platforms and upgraded corresponding Oracle databases. Coordinated and applied quarterly CPUs to Oracle DBs and created a patch-tracking document. Created SQL Server 2005 System Restore Guide for disaster recovery of all onsite instances. Documented the procedure of backing up damaged transaction log files (e.g. torn pages) to minimize data loss in a SQL Server production environment. Upgraded SQL Server instances from 2000 to 2005 and applied service pack updates. Tested and configured mirroring of SQL Server 2005 instance. Used STMS to move SAP Transports between dev, test, and production clients. Promoted use of code inspector to improve SAP ABAP code. Utilized relevant SAP transactions to perform SAP Basis and Oracle DB administration tasks. Participated in SOX audits.

Designed, developed, and implemented a reporting architecture for a 24/7 ad hoc global reporting implementation that was utilized with the roll-out of the Oracle Applications suite. Created reports in Oracle Reports 6i and Oracle Discoverer 9i. Supported a 30-member development team globally across multiple delivery locations. Served as a product champion of Noetix Suite, esp. Views. Developed a security approach to limit reporting data access. Designed, built, and supported pre-production and production batch schedules. Identified and addressed technical infrastructure issues related to batch scheduling and procedures.
