About William Viney

I am a writer and researcher. Author of TWINKIND (2023) TWINS (2021) and WASTE (2014).I work on different aspects of health, health data, public policy and cultural history. I tend to use qualitative, creative and collaborative methods. I have experience of teaching undergraduates and postgraduates in English studies, philosophy, medicine, and genomics. And I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.I have held advisory and consultancy roles with different health organisations: Ada Lovelace Institute and the Health Foundation, Health Research Authority, Global Alliance for Genetic Health (GA4GH), Kings College London, NIHR BioResource, NIHR UCL Hospitals Biomedical Research Centre, METADAC, and UCLH Farr Institute. My writing has appeared in popular online and print formats such as Cabinet Magazine, frieze, Times Literary Supplement, and Wellcome Collection, and academic journals like BMJ: Medical Humanities, New Genetics & Society, and Sociology of Health & Illness. Where possible, I believe research should be public and accessible. I have helped to make podcasts, film, and arts projects that are associated with the health research I have been involved in.

I supported public and patient involvement in biomedical research. The Patient Experience Research Centre (PERC) is a multidisciplinary group of clinicians, public health specialists and social scientists combining strengths in quantitative and qualitative research methods. I helped to promote active communication between patients, researchers and clinical staff to address real problems, and through this improve the quality of healthcare and the impact of translational research.

We were a group of scientists, sociologists, anthropologists and artists exploring how personalisation actually works. What are optimum outcomes? Do personalising practices have unintended consequences? We argued that personalisation is not restricted to a single area of life and that personalised practices develop, interact and move between different sites and times. The project was split into four areas: personalised medicine and care; data science; digital cultures; interactive arts practices.I worked closely with Professor Sophie Day to run studies in health - our studies in breast cancer care and HIV highlighted how NHS services were adapting to new ways of diagnosing, understanding and targeting disease.
