About William Vo

With a background in engineering and experiences that range from Python coding to electric grid planning to programming devices to protect the distribution system, I know how to add value, build automation tools, pay attention to detail, learn fast, create & maintain quality relationships, and ask the right questions. As I progress toward my PE licensure, in my current role I help protect the electrical distribution network. This involves power flow analysis, SELogic programming, script building, and creating settings for intelligent grid switching devices. I hope to continue contributing these skills to the improvement of the electric utility industry in the future and gladly welcome any challenge with joy.

    Houston, Texas, Us
At CenterPoint, I:• Created a Python CYME script to automatically identify unfused laterals on our 12kV and 35KV distribution circuits, increasing accuracy and efficiency by 99%• Designed a Python CYME script to analyze and recommend settings for lateral protective device placement as part of Phase 2 of the Greater Houston Resiliency Plan to install 4,500 single phase cut-out mounted reclosers within 9 months. • Wrote a Python CYME script to auto create 51 element relay settings for 3 devices in series which coordinates up to the available fault current in model.• Program intelligent grid switching devices with SEL 651 controllers• Aid during storm duty as a damage assessor to help line crews more safely and efficiently get customers back in service• Brought knowledge to fellow engineers by presenting on how to learn and utilize code to improve our efficiency, sharing knowledge with colleagues. • Meet regularly with vendors to inquire of new technology that could bring value to the company• Mapped and improved our internal process for how we order and install voltage regulators to remove gaps and streamline work
  • Firstenergy
    Distribution Planning & Protection Engineer
    Firstenergy Jan 2022 - Apr 2024
    Akron, Oh, Us
I was responsible for the planning and protection of central Maryland's electric grid at the distribution level (34.5kV and below). This area encompassed over 80 distribution circuits containing more than 90,000 customers. I monitored load growth and regularly reviewed circuits to ensure that all facilities met best engineering practices, while identifying key projects that added grid resiliency and brought value to the ratepayers of Maryland. It was a blend of building relationships and technical work. At FirstEnergy, I had the pleasure of:• Meeting designers on site to determine the best way to service customer loads ranging from 150kW to 8 MW• Running level 2+ storm trouble as a dispatcher and damage assessor to help line crews more safely and efficiently get customers back in service• Coordinating the installation of my operating company's first bulk electric storage system to help increase customer reliability on a worst performing circuit by restoring 900+ customers in the event of a non-transient fault on the main gut• Conducting interconnection load flow studies for 2 MW renewable energy projects, informing developers of all system upgrades necessary to connect them to the grid• Collaboration with reliability engineers for the installation and programming of voltage regulators• Programming protection settings on electronic substation and line reclosers• Preparing 24+ substation transformer contingency plans to provide quick power restoration to customers during unplanned outages, reducing CMI and SAIDI across the state• Acting as FirstEnergy's engineering point for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Plan in Maryland and West Virginia, providing system upgrade cost estimates for EV charger applications
  • Nextera Energy Resources
    Project Estimator
Nextera Energy Resources Jul 2021 - Dec 2021
    Juno Beach, Fl, Us
After completing two internships with NextEra, I was happy to temporarily serve the team after graduating and transitioning to a new stage of life. While there, I aided in multi-million-dollar cost estimates for wind and solar developments across the country. I did this by continuing my internship work started years prior, creating tools that decreased the time it took the estimating team to complete modeling and analysis. Additionally, I brought together over 50 industry metrics with intelligence dashboards to update capital deconstruction and salvage values for over 100 wind projects, by developing a web-scraper in Python. This allowed upper management to better understand how material pricing affected our retiring capital projects, resulting in the discovery of millions of dollars in realized assets.
  • Texas A&M University
    Campus Ambassador
    Texas A&M University Dec 2019 - May 2021
    College Station, Tx, Us
Being a campus ambassador of the Engineering department, I got to aid the engineering advisors by fielding questions and offering advice to freshmen engineers deciding which type of engineering to pursue. Through these conversations, students were able to make well-informed decisions regarding which program they wanted to pursue. Similarly, I partnered with other student ambassadors in giving weekly presentations to prospective freshmen and their parents on Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M. We would go into depth about the industry opportunities, course curriculum, statistics on the diversity of the program, and talk of the different types of senior design projects the mechanical engineers got to take part in. The best part of presenting to students was talking about the wide range of fields my major got to touch on. Often, I would look at designing a bike as an example. You have to consider the materials in each part, the loading on each of the members, how to join the independent components together, what gear ratio would be used, the cost of the materials, and how to design it to the need of the user.
  • Cardioquip
    Biomedical Engineering Intern
    Cardioquip Aug 2020 - Nov 2020
    College Station, Texas, Us
I got the unique opportunity to intern with this small bio-medical device company while finishing up my senior year at Texas A&M university. While there, I worked with the engineering and R&D teams on three main things:1) Aided in the design of wiring harnesses for a medical blanket temperature control device2) Programmed 20+ languages into a human-machine-interface (HMI) to allow the company's product to be more readily received on the global market.3) Drafted instructions for 510(k) clearance of a medical cooling/heating device to provide clear direction to medical professionals and technicians who would be working with the device in the future. From my semester with Cardioquip, I grew knowledgeable in medical device QMS, ISO, MDR and FDA regulations. As an added bonus, my fellow interns and I advanced our Ping Pong skills together during our breaks!
  • Nextera Energy Resources
    Gas Infrastructure Intern
Nextera Energy Resources May 2020 - Aug 2020
    Juno Beach, Fl, Us
During the first summer of the pandemic, I was fortunate to have the chance to intern with NextEra energy's subsidiary, Trinity Operating. I worked with drilling engineers to automate processes relating to the querying, storage, and presentation of hydraulic fracturing data. I was able to integrate Lean Six Sigma methodology into my summer project, which saved the company $700k annually. Through new KPI & data dashboards I built, the operations team was able to expedite the amount of time it took for critical decision making. In order to get this project done in during the internship, I learned 4 unique programs within the first two weeks of starting. I regularly learned from the Geology Operations and Drilling & Completions groups to better understand the significance of the data I handled. At the end of the summer, I showcased my project to the executive and managerial staff and received an offer to come work for Trinity Operating after graduation.
  • Nextera Energy Resources
    Engineering And Construction Intern
Nextera Energy Resources May 2019 - Aug 2019
    Juno Beach, Fl, Us
Having just finished sophomore year of university, I got the chance to intern in Florida with the world's leading developer in solar and wind projects. Selected by the cost estimating team within the engineering and construction department, my mission that summer was to assist the team with:• Cross functionally integrating 3rd party machine learning A.I. with existing processes to save time and travel costs on site surveys• Updating and improving databases of wind and solar technologies to ensure accuracy for project bids• Traveling to natural gas combined cycle, solar, and wind generators across the country to build relationships with and learn from facility operatorsDuring the internship I learned of a practical team need and applied myself to help. I ended up teaching myself how to code in Python to digitize and automate an estimating tool that reduced the time of a manual task by 98%. This resulted in annual savings of over $18,000 and created a tool that the company still uses to this day, resulting in 1000s of man hours being better utilized for value-add activities. I presented this as my summer project for the executive and managerial team and afterward, received an offer to come back the following summer.
