Working within a small team of engineers to develop both the Symmetrix Performance Analyzer (SPA) and the Essential Performance Library Report Service (ERS). These are web-based applications using the Spring framework that collects, stores, and displays performance metrics for the Symmetrix line of enterprise level storage arrays. Main activities include the following:Interfacing with an external data collection facility which retrieves the current status of the entire storage array every five minutes. The data collected consists of hundreds of metrics across dozens of categories of components such as directors, ports, cache, and disks.Calculating key performance metrics on the physical and logical components in the system. The metrics are saved to a database for long term storage and aggregation.Developing a query service API to allow clients to request data from the server through a RESTful web service endpoint. The back end constructs Hibernate queries to extract the data from a Postgres database and returns JSON formatted results to the client.Developing a Java PowerPoint document generator that uses the Apache POI library interface. The PPT generator consumes a performance report defined as a JSON string and creates the appropriate tables and charts to allow customer service engineers to quickly profile Symmetrix performances for customers.Performed alert checking on collected metrics based on customer specified threshold values. Alerts were generated based upon algorithms using the current metric values and the set thresholds.Assisted in solving customer issues with performance and charting results. Analysis was done using log files collected at the customer site as well as in-house reproduction of customer environments. Additional support performed through WebEx sessions with customers and customer support.

Software engineering work in support of the FAA Enhanced Traffic Management System (ETMS).Worked with a small team of engineers contracted to the Department of Transportation at the Volpe National Transportation System Center to develop various components of the FAA’s Enhanced Traffic Management System. The ETMS network is a highly-distributed networking system running primarily on HP-UNIX and Red Hat Linux platforms. Main activities included the following:● Designed the Air Traffic Control (ATC) Data Replay simulation tool. ETMS receives a continuous feed of live data from numerous external sources that define and shape the flow of air traffic. The ATC Simulation tool allows for days worth of canned data (previously recorded from live data feeds) to be replayed into the ETMS hubsite. The ATC simulator was written in Java and could be run across multiple machines.● Participated in the development of the ETMS Multicasting Application (EMA), an object-oriented C++ application written for Linux. EMA’s goal was to reduce the amount of bandwidth consumed by hub site processes transferring duplicate files to numerous remote sites. EMA provided multicasting capability (via UDP) to a group of listening sites, backed up by a TCP based verification and hole fill mechanism.● Developed an object-oriented, multi-threaded Java based API to allow Java applications to connect to and exchange messages with the ETMS network employed by the FAA using a proprietary Network Addressing protocol layered on top of TCP/IP. Development activities included: formalizing requirements documentation, writing design specifications (including UML class and sequence diagrams), implementing code, managing software builds and version control, and executing test procedures (unit, integration, system, and regression).
