My professional research is in medieval castles and landscapes in England and Scotland. I spend a lot of my time thinking about the interaction between buildings, environment, and communities in the past; heritage interpretation; telling more diverse stories of the medieval past; collaborative and interdisciplinary research. I am experienced in briefing 2d and 3d historical reconstruction images and models.I have presented my research to international conferences, seminars, invited lectures and workshops. I have also published academic articles and reports on aspects of medieval archaeology and cultural heritage.Before becoming a professional historian, I gained experience in the heritage sector and in in third-sector work. My undergraduate and master's degrees are in Late Antique & Byzantine Studies, with a focus on warfare and society in the eastern Mediterranean, 3rd-6th centuries CE, but my training included aspects of ancient, late antique and Byzantine history, architecture, archaeology, Ancient & Byzantine Greek, ancient and medieval Latin.My philosophy of exploring and explaining the past is simple: make it relatable, relevant, interesting. The power of history is in its ability, through various media, to change how we think in the present, for the better.I have lived for different periods of time in London, Belfast, Oxford, York, Edinburgh (UK); Mostar (Bosnia & Herzegovina); Istanbul (Turkey).
