Atmospheric research using remote sensing and in situ observations to obtain a complete physical understanding of PM2.5 concentration variability at the neighborhood scale. To facilitate this research, a light-weight sensor package was developed and installed into a large remote-control model airplane, also built in-house, and an off-the-shelf autopilot system was integrated into the RC system. MATLAB was used for statistical analysis to fully characterize PM2.5 concentration on a neighborhood scale. Machine learning techniques, such as Self Organizing Maps (SOM), were used to classify meteorological and particulate data for a better understanding of the PM2.5 dependence on weather patterns. Geostatistical analysis techniques, such as variograms, were used to determine the spatial scale of the particulate measurements.
