EVALUATION OF THE INFLUENCE IN ROAD SAFETY BEFORE-AFTER THE INTERVENTION IN A URBAN STOP CONTROLLED INTERSECTIONThe high accident indices all around the word and the socioeconomic consequences that it generates in society create the need for several interventions to be made in order to improve the road safety. In urban roads with stop control, characteristics like signaling and visibility are fundamental for the driver to make the decision of crossing the flow of the main road in safety. It is, therefore, necessary to have a detailed knowledge of the effects of these characteristics on the safety in order to analyze the importance of interventions that aspire renovation and improvement of the geometric design and of the signaling on roads where stop controls are present. Because of the randomness of the phenomenon and also because of the dependence on many non-controllable factors, the number of expected accidents might vary with time even tough no treatment was made. Subsequently, an in-depth study is necessary to determine this parameter. This thesis will evaluate the impacts of implementing an intervention on roads with stop control in the city of Fortaleza-Ceará, Brazil. Consequently, an observational naive before-after study and an observational before-after with comparison group study will be made. In this work, 112 intersection are going to be analysed, taking into account accident data from January 2016 to June 2018, when improvements in horizontal and vertical signalling were done as part of a treatment made by a local traffic engineering institution. The results obtained by the analysis using the naive method demonstrate that renewing the signalling and improving the geometric design is effective in reducing the amount of accidents on stop controlled roads, with an average reduction of 56%, which for a confidence interval of 95%, it is between 45% and 67%.
