Assistant Vice Provost For Research And Executive Director, Venture Development Center (Retired)

Greater Boston Area

Member of executive team that has put the policies and people in place to achieve long-term increases in research, development and innovation. Instrumental in achieving record-setting research funding growth.Game-changers I am particularly proud of:>To spur collaborative innovation with other universities and industry, created the Venture Development Center (VDC) in 2009. It has become the University of Massachusetts flagship startup incubator in Boston. I led it from vision through construction to operations, raising $8 million to launch it. It has been financially self-sufficient since opening. Recruited leading entrepreneurs and investors to serve as Entrepreneurs-in-Residence. So far we've supported 116 companies, which have collectively raised $2.08 billion of venture capital and created 2,725 jobs in diverse industries. My 18,000 square foot VDC project was conceived as a pilot for an eventual science and technology park. That vision is becoming reality with the lease in 2019 of the university’s 20-acre waterfront site on Columbia Point to Accordia Partners which is transforming the site into “Dorchester Bay City” — a mixed-use life sciences-based development hoping to rival Kendall Square in Cambridge. Accordia paid $235 million for the site’s ground lease, nearly ten times the $18.7 million that UMass paid in 2010 for the Bayside site.>To retain entrepreneurial talent that attends university in Massachusetts, launched the Global Entrepreneur-in-Residence Program, which gives visas to company founders who otherwise would have to leave the US after they graduate. Fortune called this "Massachusetts' clever immigration reform workaround." 72 entrepreneurs have gotten visas. The Venture Development Center was named a 2015 Game Changer (“51 innovative people and organizations did extraordinary things”) by the Boston Globe Magazine.
