During my PhD I studied the ferromagnetic heavy-fermion metal YbNi4P2, a system which presents a challenge to current theory due to the presence of a ferromagnetic “quantum critical point” — this is a (continuous) phase transition at absolute zero temperature that is driven by a non thermal parameter (here via chemical substitution). Beyond being a theoretical curiosity, quantum criticality alters the electronic properties of metals, and often new phases of matter such as unconventional superconductivity are found in the vicinity. The reason for the presence of ferromagnetic quantum criticality in YbNi4P2 is currently debated, with a popular hypothesis suggesting that it is only allowed due to the electronic structure being (quasi) one dimensional. I explored the electronic properties both experimentally and theoretically:• Built and performed millikelvin temperature experiments in large magnetic fields, including measurements of samples inside pressure cells. Designed sample stage and parts, thermometry, low noise electronics, and implemented experiment control programming.• Analysed large and complex data set of high field measurements, extracting oscillatory signals to probe the electronic band structure. Built an app and analysis tools so that complex signals could be quickly explored with different techniques or parameters.• Performed electronic structure calculations using the University’s high performance computing services. Provided collaborators with direct comparisons for their experiments and publication.

• Led optics and electronics laboratories for groups of ∼10 undergraduates.• Assessed lab reports and provided feedback to students.
