Niskayuna, Ny
Project leader, inventor and technology developer (modeling and experimental) for optical and magnetic sensing technologies involving specialty optical fiber, MEMS, nanotechnology, SPR and various spectroscopies for application to biosensing, inertial sensing and harsh environment sensing.
Led the effort to design and characterize the development of recording head technology for heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR). Invented the nano "lollipop" antenna, the planar solid immersion mirror, the offset coupling grating and other basic nanotechnology components resulting in the first demonstration of near field HAMR and subsequently enabling the 1 terabit per square inch magnetic storage density record.
Invented the dielectric grating-coupled biosensor and led the team which demonstrated its sensitivity for measurement of low molecular weight binding reactions.
Activities and Societies: Far infrared FTIR spectroscopy for understanding solid state properties of charge density wave compounds (NbSe3).
Activities and Societies: One of two department graduates receiving an NSF fellowship. Phi Beta Kappa. Sigma Xi.
