Chair Of The Philosophy Department
I successfully steered the department's efforts to get state approval for a B.A. program in philosophy. The application process was long and arduous; it required the collaboration of all of the full-time members of the department for several years. Against difficult odds in a challenging budgetary environment, the department succeeded in getting the first new major at Salem State in nearly a decade, and I am proud to count that as an accomplishment during my tenure as department Chair. My routine duties as Chair included evaluating junior faculty and part-time instructors, hiring part-time instructors, overseeing the departmental budget, scheduling courses, advising students, writing departmental reports, handling student complaints, hiring and supervising the department’s secretary, overseeing departmental committees, representing the department to internal and external constituencies, and handling other responsibilities assigned by the Provost and the Dean. As chair, I had a reduced teaching load of 3 sections per semester.
