About William Chapin

I got my start in research robotics in 2016 at NASA Langley Research Center. My focuses have been Autonomous In Space Assembly (ISA) and Kinematics and Optimization for Mixed Serial-Parallel systems. While at NASA, I worked on the Commercial Infrastructure for Robotic Assembly and Servicing (CIRAS) project, wherin I wrote software for several NASA robots along with the overarching control algorithms to assemble a square-bay truss piece by piece. Also during my time at NASA I developed ROS links for non-standard robots such as NASA's tendon actuated manipulator LSMS. After coming to Virginia Tech, I committed to my research in mixed kinematic systems, involving the optimization of stacked stewart platforms, the use of parallel manipulators as the end effectors of serial mechanisms, and identifying ways to produce useful fast kinematic approximations for non-closed-form overactuated problems. Also during my time at Virginia Tech, I have worked in a managerial and mentorship role at FASERLab, leading a senior design team in the development of a habitat scale 3D printer.I am a proponent of open source software use and development, and much of my research has also been collated into an open source python robotics package I've developed entitled Basic Robotics. Basic Robotics is developed based on Kevin Lynch's Modern Robotics, and features implementations of screw theory, wrench theory, statics, dynamics, and kinematics for serial and parallel mechanisms, and easy to use transformation handling. This package also handles fast low fidelity workspace analysis for serial arms using alpha-shape projection in multiple dimensions. I am currently looking for roles in robotics software and research. I am comfortable in electronics and mechanical design, and would love a role featuring low TRL robotics research, prototyping, and development.
