First and foremost, I love finding patterns. Whether it's solving massive jigsaw puzzles with my family, or looking for trends in data, there is something magical about making sense of something seemingly nonsensical. Ever since I designed my first computer program in my freshman physics lab, I have been obsessed with using software and mathematics to solve practical problems. When I first learned that I could use statistical analysis to predict purchases at my university's food court, I was amazed at how much we have to learn from the world around us. Over the course of my internship at UAB, my team and I looked for patterns. Only this time, we were looking for patterns in the positions of atoms in a crystal lattice. Using this information we were able to study super-hard Tantalum Boride for use in industry. Our findings are published in the January 2020 edition of the Journal of Materials Research. Currently, I'm learning how to use powerful software such and R and Python to perform better data analysis and numerical modeling. Even though it's a bit trickier than jigsaw puzzles, the satisfaction that comes from hammering out the final bugs in a program and watching long spent hours researching and working on a project finally pay off is absolutely worth the time it took to get to that point.
