People in my realm run the systems that run the business-- hardware, software, networks, databases, etc. Sometimes it's firefighting; sometimes it's strategic thinking; sometimes it's nurturing the spirits of the technologists and problem-solvers around us.

Director Of Enterprise Infrastructure And Client ServicesBurton Snowboards Nov 2006 - May 2015Burlington, Vermont, UsWe run the systems that run the business. From the laptop to the server room, from the storage network to the global network, the teams reporting to me understand and support the underpinnings of the digital aspects of supporting snowboarding and creating fun. From climbing towers to replace a wireless access point to building and integrating open-source, off-the-shelf, or state-of-the-art technology, my crew can do the impossible - and that makes us mighty! -
Unix Systems AdministratorUspto May 2005 - Oct 2006Alexandria, Virginia, Us* Worked to stabilize and secure VMware implementation to comply with Patent and Trademark Office standards.* Evangelized the use of Linux-based commodity servers as a realistic alternative to the "big-iron" options (HP-UX, IBM AIX, and Sun Solaris) already in use, putting together the financial justification and performance metrics to demonstrate a value proposition for the horizontal scalability for many types of applications.* Part of a cross-functional team led by the Deputy CIO to develop an Enterprise Architecture framework. Defined interdepartmental workflows, implemented a document management system and defined document templates to facilitate this new framework.* Integrated HP-UX systems with Microsoft Active Directory to demonstrate a more comprehensive authentication infrastructure across platforms. -
Unix Systems Administrator / SupervisorTitan Corporation Jul 2001 - May 2005Reston, Va, UsBrought in to fill a temporary, targeted need in support of Titan's customer (the US Patent and Trademark Office), but stayed to lead the team of support staff of Unix systems administrators to provide 24x7 support for several dozen servers of various flavors of Unix (HP-UX, IBM AIX, Sun Solaris, and others).* Drove continuous improvement in technical support abilities through exercise, mentoring and performance reviews. We implemented and improved processes like root-cause analysis, after-action reviews, and SLA monitoring.* Advised and took direction from federal employees on new systems and initiatives, often coordinating with multiple contract teams to provide on-time and under-budget project delivery while maintaining a reputation for excellence.* Coordinated personnel scheduling, system preparation, and disaster recovery planning, in support of a massive data center relocation project, carefully coordinated to minimize end-user impact.* Managed system configuration changes, trouble tickets and outage scheduling through a highly customize Remedy system, including coordination and approval from multiple department managers and system owners. -
Unix System Administrator / Interim It Operations ManagerRx.Com Oct 2000 - May 2001Joined as a senior member of the system administration team for this online pharmacy. Tapped within months to fill the gap let by the departing IT Operations Manager, reporting to the CIO.* Stabilized and documented the on-site collocation data centers.* Streamlined the disaster recovery and business continuity plans to reflect reality and address changing business conditions.* Mentored junior system admins through implementation of projects like Interactive Voice Response systems, advanced performance monitoring of the ATG Dynamo platform on Sun Solaris, and an Intrusion Detection system.* Kept the IT infrastructure team engaged through the troubled times of the dot-com bust and eventually coordinated final shutdown efforts when the business decided to shut down.

Unix System / Database AdministratorVlsi Technology Aug 1993 - Oct 2000Brought in to support the first Unix-based systems for development and computer-integrated manufacturing. Led small teams and projects focusing on using new technology in support of a billion-dollar, state-of-the-art semiconductor fab.* As part of the Philips Semiconductors acquisition, I took part in several global, cross-functional projects to integrate the VLSI infrastructure, and to disseminate the best practices of our internally-developed software and systems into the larger organization.* Designed and implemented a massive (for the time) database for tracking defect information from multiple engineering and manufacturing sources, looking for larger trends or patterns to improve the rate of learning on production yield issues. Looking back, this was an early foray into turning "big data" into actionable insights, and we pushed available technology to its limits (and that on a budget).* Collaborated with systems/network teams in San Jose and Tempe offices to re-engineer email, DNS, DECnet, Active Directory and other parts of the company-wide IT infrastructure to provide stable, reliable and efficient services for our user community.* Used network monitoring software and performance metrics to disprove a myth of an "unreliable network" linking the company sites. This data drove a decision to use network file transfer instead of physically shipping media, saving thousands in shipping costs and reducing workflow times from 2-3 days to a few hours.* Provided C programming language expertise to the development team as the worked through CELLworks and TIBco libraries to create interfaces between various automated fab equipment to the VAX/VMS manufacturing system. This improved WIP tracking and helped to virtually eliminate human error in the complex semiconductor manufacturing processes.* Established disaster recovery strategy for Unix systems, evaluating software and hardware to select the best-fit solution for the San Antonio site.
