This previous summer I assumed a WFH position with the Decatur, IL Substation branch for TDDME System Protection at Ameren. While here, my work was primarily concerned with the replacement and subsequent upgrade of Substation equipment. Specifically, I performed the initial information gathering and drafting of jobs that would replace the recloser units within several substations with newer models. This job gave me additional insight into system protection at Ameren and helped to build upon my previous summer's experience.

I returned to Ameren to work in their Relay Maintenance Engineering department for Division VI in Belleville, IL. My daily duties involved testing relay programming schemes, as well as updating and redrawing engineering schematics. Testing relay programming schemes involved some line impedance calculations, along with using the in-house relay testing units to test schemes before they could be implemented in the field. Updating schematics involved removing obsolete relays or relays in need of replacement, and inserting new, typically backwards compatible relays. I also went out into the field several times to observe Relay Engineering Technicians install new relays and replace older ones at various substations. I gained valuable insight into the levels of protection surrounding the grid that ensure blackouts do not occur.

I worked an internship with the USAF at Scott AFB in Illinois. I came in as a civilian at GS-4 and performed several clerical and interpersonal duties during my time at the Civilian Personnel Building. One of the biggest jobs I had while I was there was completely clearing out old employee records for all personnel on base that were past the hold date, then organizing and filing the 2015-2018 personnel records. I also was responsible for assisting any civilians who came into the office in need of help with pay/benefits, outprocessing/transfers, and retirement. I also performed several other duties essential to keeping an office running smoothly.I took this job because I wanted to get more experience with the armed forces, as both of my parents served in the USAF. It wasn't as pertinent to engineering as my previous job with Ameren, but it still allowed me to get a good grasp of how the USAF functions, not to mention honing my communication and organizational skills.

My Co-op with the Ameren Illinois branch of Ameren took place during the second semester of my 3rd year of college. I worked with Power Distribution/Transmission in the engineering department of the Marion OC alongside Career Engineers and Design Specialists.Daily duties involved:Assembling job packets for Distribution/Transmission pole replacements/maintenance.Coordinating with other service companies such as phone and cable to maintain records of transfers and maintenance of lines.Going out into the field on job inspections to verify that work was done as described in the job packet. This involved taking info from the pole/transformer and ensuring list of materials and labor was correct.Various administrative duties such as record keeping and maintaining office resources.I was able to sit in on many of the meetings that took place in my area of the company, Division VI, involving new technology, safety, and company responsibilities. I learned a lot about Ameren and how Power Distribution/Transmission works during my stay with them, and can go further into detail upon request.
