I have been a scientific researcher, a teacher of biology and chemistry, a Science Department head, an Vice Principal, a Principal, a Supervisor of High and Middle Schools, Adolescent Services and science. For the past few years I was seconded to the New Brunswick Department of Education as the Director of the 21st Century Research Office.Change in education is happening all around us. Teachers in every jurisdiction have answered to need to move away from what was to what must be if we are rot adequately prepare students for an uncertain global economy. Change is imperative. As the pace of change in industry, and hence the demands of the emerging economy, increases, public education MUST learn to keep up. The status quo is unsustainable. The stability of the workforce depends on industry working with education to keep the skills and attitudes relevant. There are challenges. This must be done within the constraints of education policy, but it can be done. The talent pipeline must begin in K-12 and carry on through post-secondary. To that end I am currently working with CyberNB and others in the K-12 public Education space to forge partnerships between education and industries (Cybersecurity for one) to enhance instruction using authentic examples from their world.
