Built an enclosed mall in suburban Minneapolis and a regional shopping center in suburban Chicago. I was in charge of site acquisition, leasing, and both short-term and long-term financing including periodic draws against construction in place.I enjoyed an ownership position in these centers and in others which affiliates of American Income Properties, Inc. had developed earlier.

As Executive Vice President of JCP Realty, Inc., I directly oversaw the development of 20 marquee regional shopping centers nationwide; in partnership with major developers including Melvin Simon, Edward J. DeBartolo, Ernest Hahn, and Dayton Development Corporation (which now has been subsumed into Target Corporation).I built and managed a staff of 26 real estate professionals from a standing start, including six real estate attorneys; site acquisition specialists; engineers; architects; and property managers.I reported to the Vice President - Real Estate of the parent company, J. C. Penney Company, Inc. and regularly made site acquisition presentations to the Real Estate Committee of the parent company.I was in charge of Zoning matters in connection to the major acreages which we acquired, and appeared before Zoning boards in several cities nationwide in presenting our case for a favorable Zoning result.Upon my voluntary departure from the Penney Company, JCP Realty, Inc. had about 20 more marquee regional shopping centers in the pipeline.

I was in charge of Legal Leasing for a Regional Shopping Center which we built in suburban Cleveland, and for a Regional Shopping Center which we built for Macy's on Long Island.I was the first Operating Manager of the Long Island development, and consulted to the Company with respect to a Regional Shopping Center which it was building in suburban Boston.Prior to Winmar: in private law practice and with an Admiralty law firm in New York, preparing cases for trial by senior attorneys. I wrote the winning brief based on a novel theory of my own devising, in an "in rem" case in the Fourth Circuit, Richmond - which made new law in a 2 to 1 decision in our favor, which upset the staid and hidebound Admiralty bar no end. The other side did not appeal further.
