About Will Lush

I use numerical modeling techniques to better understand how physical processes interact with planktonically-dispersing benthic organisms to shape biogeography in the coastal ocean. My ongoing research uses Lagrangian particle tracking tools in conjunction with oceanic generalized circulation models to model larval dispersal, along with simple population models and metapopulation theory to understand how patterns of circulation can result in observed biogeographic patterns. My doctoral work has been primarily centered around modeling approaches, although I am looking to incorporate more fieldwork and real-world observations in the future.

  • University Of New Hampshire
    Doctoral Researcher
University Of New Hampshire Aug 2019 - Present
    Durham, New Hampshire, United States
I research and develop novel methods for the numerical modeling of meroplanktonic larval dispersal and biogeographic structure in the coastal ocean, with the goal of understanding how physical processes interact with larval dispersal to shape species abundance and distribution in shelf seas. I am currently working on publishing two manuscripts on the topic, with a third on the way.I am the recipient of the 2019 College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS) Fellowship at the University of New Hampshire, and I have presented my work at both the 2022 and 2024 Ocean Sciences Meetings, the 2022 and 2024 Benthic Ecology Meetings, as well as the summer 2023 Coastal Ocean Dynamics Gordon Research Conference.
  • University Of New Hampshire
Teaching Assistant (Esci 501: Introduction To Oceanography)
University Of New Hampshire Aug 2017 - Aug 2019
    Durham, New Hampshire
I instructed and led multiple weekly laboratory sessions with between 10 and 20 undergraduate students that introduced basic principles in physical, biological, and chemical oceanography. I also held twice-weekly office hours, where I worked with students to address questions and concerns around the course material. I also taught full lectures when required, with class sizes exceeding 100 students.I coordinated with the course instructor, other teaching assistants, and UNH marine operations staff to bring students on field trips aboard the UNH research vessel R/V Gulf Challenger, where we demonstrated coastal oceanographic field techniques including sediment gravity coring, grab sampling of estuarine sediments, plankton tows, basic navigation skills, and water sampling with Niskin bottles. I also collaborated with the course instructor and other teaching assistants to develop and grade course material for undergraduate students.
  • Pocono Raceway
    Sustainability Intern
    Pocono Raceway May 2017 - Aug 2017
    Long Pond, Pa
In this role, I collaborated with racetrack and facilities management to improve pre- and post-consumer recycling and composting outcomes and aided in the establishment of successful ongoing composting and recycling programs at the facility. I developed signage and educated race attendees and employees on on-site recycling and composting programs during NASCAR Cup Series races. I also organized an effort with a local charitable organization to donate hundreds of pounds of otherwise landfill-bound nonperishable food items to local food banks. In an effort to evaluate the efficacy of recycling and composting efforts, I conducted interviews with race fans and racetrack employees throughout the 2017 race season. My work resulted in a marked increase in fan and employee awareness and usage of these composting and recycling programs.
  • Penn State University
    Research Assistant
Penn State University Nov 2016 - Aug 2017
    University Park, Pa
I analyzed facilities and waste management data at Pocono Raceway in order to develop a plan to reduce overall waste and implement sustainable waste management practices at the race track. I engaged racetrack management, partners, and stakeholders at the facility and in the local community to understand ongoing landfill diversion efforts at Pocono Raceway and within the broader NASCAR organization. I worked with Pocono Raceway to develop sustainability reporting in line with other large professional sporting venues in order to quantify the environmental impact of each race event.
  • Hyliion
    Lead Mechanical Engineer
    Hyliion Oct 2015 - May 2016
    Greater Pittsburgh Area
I collaborated with a small team early in the company's development to design and build prototype electric drive systems for tractor trailer rear axles.I oversaw the design and fabrication of electric battery and drivetrain components, including overall battery pack design, battery pack cooling, and motor-drive axle coupling and gearing for both belt and direct-driven prototypes. I managed fabrication of prototype parts, both in-house and with contractors, and developed lasting relationships with outside fabricators and vendors. As part of an early-stage startup, I also engaged with current and potential investors at startup accelerator events and participated in the overall company decision-making process, as well as assisting in hiring my replacement when I left to pursue graduate education.
  • Carnegie Mellon University
    Mechanical Engineerin Undergraduate Teaching Fellow
Carnegie Mellon University Jan 2015 - May 2015
    Greater Pittsburgh Area
I gained valuable early experience in teaching undergraduate students, working with teaching assistants and the course instructor to teach principles of mechanical design to first-year undergraduates. In this role, I held weekly office hours and led laboratory and class sessions on computer-aided design and fabrication basics, as well as solid mechanics and materials, while studying full-time in the last year of my undergraduate degree.
  • Scripps Institution Of Oceanography
    Marine Physical Lab Intern
Scripps Institution Of Oceanography Jun 2014 - Aug 2014
    La Jolla, California
As part of the summer undergraduate internship program in the Marine Physical Lab, I worked in the lab of Dr. Dariusz Stramski, where I developed testing and calibration criteria for an optical oceanographic instrument (the LISST-VSF, from Sequoia Scientific), intended to study optical backscatter patterns from differently-sized marine particles.I also designed a benchtop sample chamber for the LISST-VSF that effectively reduced outside light sources and internal scattering during calibration, with a magnetic stirring component that ensured that test particles remained suspended during testing. I worked with the Marine Science Development Shop to design and fabricate the chamber, which was still in use as of 2020.
  • Carnegie Mellon University
    Facilities Management Green Practices Intern
Carnegie Mellon University Sep 2011 - Jan 2014
    Carnegie Mellon University
In this role, I worked with Facilities Management employees and managers to develop strategies for improving sustainable waste management practices across campus, primarily working with post-consumer composting programs and recycling efforts. I oversaw and ran a program to sort and recycle e-waste, toner, batteries, and other toxic and hard-to-recycle items, identifying cooperating organizations and vendors to ensure that items were effectively diverted from landfill streams. In addition, I organized, staffed, and ran post-consumer recycling and composting at events across campus, including football games and student and alumni events.
