As senior executive in machine learning, I build world-class teams in ML, AI, optimization and quantum computing, and I focus on commercializing innovative technologies from inception to market release. My extensive ML experience includes a unique combination of business, technology development, and pure and applied research. At Sanctuary I support a talented team of scientists, engineers and developers in our pursuit of human-like AI for control of humanoid robots. As SVP of Machine Learning at D-Wave Systems, I built the Quadrant.AI business unit, and successfully sold and delivered multiple consulting engagements where we won several global benchmarks including the Cataracts Computer Vision Challenge. Prior to forming this business unit, I led a group of researchers and software engineers developing the first applications for quantum computing hardware. Our technology has been covered in Science, Nature, and Time. I have over 20 granted US patents in a variety of domains including ML, optimization, constraint satisfaction, and quantum computing. Before D-Wave I was a Senior Scientist at NASA where I started a machine learning group. I was responsible for basic research, funding the group, cultivating relationships within NASA, and developing ML applications for NASA's data sets. Before NASA I was VP Software at Bios Group, where I led a team of 30 scientists to deliver projects to executives at Fortune 500 companies and government agencies. My Ph.D. is in theoretical physics from the University of Toronto where I studied models of superconductivity. I began my career in machine learning with post-doctoral study at the Santa Fe Institute, where I co-authored the "No Free Lunch" Theorems which are still referenced in ML courses and literature today. Keywords: machine learning, ML, robotics, deep learning, graphical models, technical management, technical sales, variational inference, quantum algorithms, artificial intelligence, AI, unsupervised learning

Vp Of ResearchRelationalai Apr 2022 - PresentBerkeley, California, UsI'm working with the top-flight RelationalAI research team and our academic network to apply state-of-the-art inference for faster and smarter optimization and machine learning by exploiting structured domain knowledge. -
Chief ScientistSanctuary Ai Nov 2019 - Apr 2022Vancouver, Bc, CaResponsible for AI strategy, research, and engineering for a successful robotics companypursuing embodied artificial general intelligence. -
Svp Machine LearningD-Wave Systems Inc. Nov 2017 - Nov 2019As SVP of Machine Learning at D-Wave, I worked with the senior executive team to build the Quadrant.AI business unit. I built and retained a world-class team of ML researchers and engineers in a competitive hiring market, and led the sales effort to meet our revenue goals. Our customers included senior executives at Fortune 500 companies in telecommunications, banking, and manufacturing. We won several global benchmarks in ML including the Cataracts Computer Vision Challenge, and we surpassed in-house benchmarks on all of our client projects.

Vp Product DevelopmentD-Wave Systems Inc. Apr 2005 - Nov 2017As VP Algorithms and Applications at D-Wave Systems, I led the effort to design and build applications for the quantum computer. In this role, I refocused the company’s application strategy from optimization to machine learning to take advantage of the stochastic aspects of the quantum hardware. I defined research directions and built a full-stack team of developers, architects, and researchers for the world’s first quantum annealing computer. I participated in key sales engagements as the lead sales engineer, and helped sell customers such as Google, NASA, and USC. I led a team to collaborate with Google’s computer vision group to develop the first quantum machine learning application; this project ultimately led to D-Wave’s second hardware sale.Throughout my career at D-Wave, I have continued my work as a thought leader in optimization and machine learning research. I have published numerous papers and have been granted over 20 patents in areas such as optimization, machine learning, and quantum annealing.

Senior ScientistNasa Ames Research Center Aug 2002 - Apr 2005Moffett Field, California, UsThe Intelligent Systems division of NASA is focused on the advanced information technology aspects of aerospace missions and operations. As Senior Scientist, I built a machine learning group to provide additional insight into NASA’s unique datasets. I hired and led a team of 6 ML researchers and generated over $1M in internal funding for the group. I initiated and led projects including a distributed control mechanism for a visionary NASA program used to control a swarm of autonomous space vehicles, and machine learning algorithms to model large scale structure in the early universe. -
Vp ScienceBios Group 1997 - 2002Bios Group applies scientific insights from complexity theory to solve business problems for Fortune 500 clients. As VP of Science and Research, I hired and led a team of 40 scientists and researchers; these teams were responsible for delivery of all customer engagements. In addition to defining technical approaches to projects and managing delivery, I assisted in most of the technical sales and was directly responsible for over $5M in sales to senior executives of Fortune 500 clients. I led delivery of over 20 consulting projects including a machine learning and optimization project for supply chains for one of the world’s largest consumer packaged goods companies. I also continued my academic research and publishing on optimization and machine learning in economics and computer science journals.

Post Doctoral ResearcherSanta Fe Institute 1992 - 1996Santa Fe, Nm, UsSFI is an interdisciplinary research institute studying fundamental principles of complex systems including physical, computational, biological, economic, and social systems. During my post-doc I researched the limits of search and optimization methods, distributed methods for control of complex systems, economic and biologic models, and new machine learning techniques. In this multi-disciplinary environment I proved the “No Free Lunch” theorems showing the limits of search algorithms; these theorems are still referenced in optimization and machine learning courses and literature today.
