When my former boss needed someone he could trust, and someone who would deliver, he called and asked me to join him at Wockhardt. I was recruited to Wockhardt from the Chicago Department of Aviation, where I was the head of human resources for O’Hare and Midway Airports. Wockhardt (an India headquartered global generic pharmaceutical manufacturer) purchased a local pharmaceutical company in 2007 that was losing millions each year. By 2012, US revenues were growing fast, and the HR wheels were coming off. My job was to fix the United States HR, answer the question “do we have the talent to define and implement our strategy” and prepare the people for the growth that was coming. As sales grew, I got to work building the human resources infrastructure, finding the right employees, building our sales team and preparing the current employees for the skills needed in global company. Along the way, we introduced Six Sigma to foster continuous improvement (and eliminated our #1 customer complaint), hired three quarters of the current leadership staff and prepared our leaders to work in a global, multi-billion dollar corporation. Today HR is fixed, and, more importantly, the people are ready for the challenges ahead.

The former head of HR for the Airports was arrested for violating City & Federal laws related to hiring and the Airport Human Resources Department was in shambles. The Chicago Department of Aviation, long a bastion of political corruption, needed a real Human Resources expert, not another political operative. That is when they called me to turn around this critical department. I was a Human Resources expert with real aviation experience (Commercial Pilot’s License, Part time Professor of HR in Aviation). I jumped into the chaos and provided solid human resources expertise where none had existed. With unquestionable integrity and expert human resources skills, I transformed the Human Resources Operations of the airports. I removed 18% of the HR employees who provided no value and I ended backroom deals that excluded great candidates in favor of the politically connected. From 2006, when I joined the Department of Aviation to 2012 when I left, there wasn’t one complaint of improper HR behavior. During that time, we privatized Midway Airport for $2.52 billion, negotiated 19 collective bargaining agreements, and resolved all HR litigation against the department. We also brought on great new talent, including new heads of Security, Finance, Construction, Operations, Environment and Legal. I left to join the former Head of HR of the City of Chicago at Wockhardt.

I joined Republic from a staffing agency so I could learn the corporate side of the recruiting. I received a tremendous education in Human Resources while at Republic. One week after I started, the plant went on strike. Without missing a beat, I jumped in and provided a replacement contingent workforce. Republic was growing and wanted to instill best practices for human resources. It was a perfect place to learn and implement great practices including competency based recruiting, and psycho-metric testing. By 2005 I transitioned to a generalist role, but the economic slowdown (rising interest rates and falling home prices) were impacting Republic. The company was sold in 2005 and my job was to downsize the company to match the reducing revenue. A painful retraction process was accomplished by treating our employees with dignity, and professionally helping them transition from the organization. When the Chicago Department of Aviation called, I saw a great opportunity to advance my career and learn new skills.
