I am a computational linguist, data scientist, and software engineer. My research and professional work has focused on machine learning, particularly as it applies to natural language: parsing, language modeling, and named entity extraction. My current interests include Deep Learning and functional programming. From my graduate work, I have an interest in the way insights from linguistics can illuminate practical engineering tasks. My education before that was in physics, which gave me a mathematical foundation that has proved useful ever since.I have been a professional software developer since 1994 and have worked on everything from Microsoft Windows, to academic research projects, to agile R&D teams, to IBM Watson. I believe software development is a fundamentally social activity, and so dedicate myself to designing systems that can serve as the foundation for other coders’ work.
